I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw Rolling Thunder with 2 Valkyries up front out of  thousands of Harleys!

Best place to be amongst a sea of Harleys not only for setting the pace but also to not listen to all that potatoe, potatoe exhaust note. cooldude

I saw it all over the VFW newsletters and emails and such for a while - really got me fired up for it.

I hope you get the chance to make it next year.  I'll be relocating (again) in another year or so and hopefully will be close enough to make it soon!

Been there (live there) done that, and actually have 2 Tshirts.

Doing it once is nice, but it is generally an awful day.  Always hot at Hell, need to drink water, very few places to pee (I did behind a giant power transformer on a freeway on-ramp, and when others saw what I did, 40 guys ran over to do the same).  Crowded (half million), loud, hot, and when you finally get to ride, it is hours of slow rolls to stops.  Sort of like an expanded MSF course.

I support the cause, but no longer make the ride.  What is amusing is how little coverage it gets in the news.  Lucky to get a few second sound bite on national news.

There's a lot more of this:

I know you live there but I just want to go one time in my life. I know it's going to be hot and miserable and I HATE parades!! I went to one last Saturday, Armed Forces Day here on main street - tire to tire...stop and go every few feet, then towards the end my clutch started to shudder! And there were 100 bikes  so I just can imagine how it would be with a million !! Grin  crazy2

You are lucky you didn't get lit up peeing on a giant transformer! Ya know pee is a great conductor of electricity. 2funny If ya lived through it I bet ppl would be calling you Hot Dog, wienne roast, sparky! 2funny 2funny

Thanks and I hope you can make it too! After reading what Jess said I think one time will be enough!

Have a great weekend!  cooldude

What I do is park at the entrance of Alington and cross the bridge on foot.
Then go to parents grave site at end of day.
No way would I ride in that mess. Makes me crazy.

You don't say.  I said I peed behind the transformer, not on the transformer.   Grin

Yeah Dave, I have many times ridden around town, up to Arlington, and seen the sights without getting caught in the event.  I used to go into the Pentagon parking lot to check out the bikes and babes, until they stopped letting you leave before the parade started.

One of the best spots is the GW Parkway, northbound past Arlington, way up the hill alongside the Potomac overlooking DC and the National Cathedral.  There are two shady little turnout overlooks where you can park and watch virtually all the bikes from the Northeast US coming southbound into town, thousands of them.  But you have to be there early.
