Trip Report Day 7 and 8

Amarillo to Albuquerque to Las Vegas, NM

Wow, feeling like 100 dollars today.  About 99 better than yesterday!!  Actually got about 8 hours of sleep.  Sitting in the Days Inn in Las Vegas, NM.  Soon to depart with about 15 other Valks on the Las Vegas Ride.  Going up to Angel Fire, Taos, and back to VEGAS BABY!!

The ride to Alby was nice and windy.  What a surprise, more wind.  As it was a day and a half ago, and my short term memory is questionable, I'll leave out the text and just show some pictures....

Near Bushland Texas....I'm feeling like a burger!!

Adrian, TX

One of my favorite places of Route 66, The almost ghost town of Glenrio...

Awoke early yesterday morning.  It was dark in Alby, and I didn't have my phone, so I didn't bother checking the time.  Toes had been twitching for some time, so I got to take a shower.  Hoping/thinking i'd see some twilight when I exited the bathroom.  I was sorely mistaken.   I found my computer, turned it on, and to my horror it was only 4:34 AM!!!  @$%%&@.....I  don't think I crawled into the tent until about 11:30.  And I was up a few times.  Had to fiddle with my CPAP to find the “altitude” adjustment.  Guess that thinner air does effect the sleep apnea.  Only about 4 hours of poor sleep, made for a long day.

Saw Stan Cool off on his way to California, and I was still hoping for light.  The office laundry was locked, and not to open until 8:00AM.  Damnation.  I needed some clean socks.  Too dark to break down camp, and I had not fully unpacked, so I was not wanting to get out the stove for coffee.  Big mistake as the Diet Mtn. Dew was not really doing the trick.  Still waiting for laundry, but was not going to happen as I had to meet Chuck, Sid, and Steve to ride up to Vegas.

Nice ride to Vegas on parts of 66, 40, and  3.  Made it to town about 1:00, and headed to “claim” my spot at Storrie Lake State Park.  As it is Memorial Day weekend, they advised me it would be filling up fast.  Not being able to relax, I left the group to set up.   The winds were Bradshaw style.  Very high winds.  Probably constant at 25, easily gusting to 40.  No sleep, losing my medicine, I was moving slow.  Tried to get my meds refilled at Walgreens.  No problem, except my Insurance is only good in Missouri.   So, for about 182.00 I could get a month supply.  Nah, I think I'll pass.  Don't understand why it matters where it is dispensed.  Should matter where it is written.

Was able to do some laundry at the Best Western...Ah, the joy of fresh socks is really hard to describe.

Anywho, didn't take a photo yesterday......Got back about 7:00,  grilled some fish and green beans, and was out by about 9:00PM.   As the winds were not conducive to a tent, I filled up the mattress, and slept open air in my little shelter.  It was a great sleep.  Woke up once to get in the sleeping bag, and then soon I saw some twilight.  Ah, I made it through the night.

A few shots of my “home”.....

Waking up early does have it's advantages, as the light is magical!!

And the sausage is quite tasty as well.

Winds are already picking up....And serious smoke is supposed to be heading our way due to the Arizona Fires.

That's it.  Kickstands up in about an hour!

Excellent ride report, thanks for the effort.   cooldude

Would love to be on this ride with ya but, having to work for a living is somewhat a limiter to what and when I get to ride.  Have fun and keep up the great ride reports.

Thanks for the ride reports/pics of your adventures. Its nice to be able to see some of the scenery that some of us have to miss due to the M-F  9-5  crap.

As to the Midway, sometimes reputation exceeds quality.  Not bad, but be willing to pay about 9.00 for an average piece of pie and coffee....

Day 9 and 10  VRCC Ride and Leaving Las Vegas to Durango...(and I did not even bring my Durango Boots!

Sitting at a table just outside of Durango.  About 6 miles from the “hub”, but about 800 feet above the 'rango.   A great couple last days.....Today was very special, as one of those unexpected treasures appeared!!   Yet once again, I'm getting ahead of myself.  Hmm, getting a head of my self?  Sounds auto erotic.

Back to Saturday, and the VRCC Las Vegas Ride.  Met up with the group and we departed promptly at 9:30AM.  Took a nice loop up north going through a few small towns that shall remain nameless, as I can not remember their names.   The first stop was a pullout, overlooking the area where Lonesome Dove was shot.  These shots are not of the area, but the group!!

Continued on through Angel Fire, then back down and around to Taos.....Lunch at the Guadalajara Grill, (or something like that).....

Get off that wall!!

Was hoping to get a group shot, but we never found a nice spot, so it was back to Vegas.  Everyone kind of went there own way, so I headed back to Storrie Lake State Park.  And from my opinion, and a few others I have spoken with, the ugliest of any State Park in NM.  Pretty much a dump.  But the proximity to Vegas is ideal.  Had I known the park was such a pit, I would have headed north to a great looking park we passed on the ride.

The winds were back last night.  When I returned to camp, I parked the Valk, and went into the “shelter”.  It took me a few seconds to notice, but when I did, the expletives were flying.  My mattress and tarp were gone!!  Somebody had to have stolen them!!  Or, as I soon discovered, it was the 50 mph gusts.....I made a quick walk around the area, and didn't see anything.  As I was ready to head to Wally World to replace the missing items, I noticed the tarp along the fence.  Ah, the tarp is here.  They were not stolen.  Faith in humanity is restored.  I peered over the fence, and saw the mattress, still inflated, hanging very close to a wall next to the lake.  I stepped on the fence, cracking it a bit, and struggled to get the mattress back over the barbed wire and back to the shelter.  Made it safely back.  Cooked up some Tilapia and was soon ready to crash.

A bit of a tough night of sleeping as even with my excessive weight holding down the mattress, the winds were incredible.  I don't believe I ever experienced the barrage that these winds were bringing.  It never really let up.  Even after sundown, there were still howling.

Got up about 5:00, coffee, breakfast, and packed up for my journey to Durango.  A couple nice early morning shots....

A few miles outside of Moro, on what I believe is 64, I came across a real treasure.  The town is called Embudo, and the place is the Classical Gas Museum.  Johnnie Meier is the proprietor and what a fantastic collection he has.  If you are into old gas pumps and globes, this place has more than I've ever seen before.  Restored and in top notch condition.  A must see if you are in the area.  I discovered Johnnie and I have several mutual acquaintances, as he was a former President of the Route 66 Association of New Mexico...

Some subjects are perfect for HDR, and these fit the bill!!!  Unfortunately, on this Notebook it is difficult and very time consuming to process an HDR fully, but here are a couple examples...

Continued North West in Chama, then headed to Pagosa Springs.  Still early, I decided to continue to Durango, and found the Something Junction State Park.  Possibly Conjunction Function, but can't be sure.  Nice place, but even the state parks jack the rates in the tourist areas.....$19.00 for the site, but it's pretty nice......still no showers and about a 2.5 mile trek on a washboard gravel road with big drop offs.  Wasn't really pleased with that.  But you can park right next to your room....

The fire is roaring....

Soon I will be making some dinner, and perhaps working on some images......

Tomorrow??  Not sure but will venture up near Telluride on the 550, and then perhaps some Utah action!!

Update....It is now tomorrow.  Sitting in the McD in Durango.  Best thing about last night, the winds finally subsided.  Worst thing about last night....27 degrees...Cold, so very cold!  Up early again, about 4:30.  Started the fire, made the coffee, chorizo and eggs for breakfast.  Heading North to Ouray and a quick visit to Telluride.  Perhaps then West to Arches National Park in Utah!!

Keep up the reports!  Love the gas museum shots, wouldn't mind visiting there myself.

It was great meeting you at LV!   I concur about the wind, it was blowing the curtains out in the hotel room....  we were suffering so much!!!!

Ride Safe!

Please see the thread at the link below in which there were suggestions made that you put your reports into a single thread for the trip so that people could easily find multiple days.  (Excellent suggestion.)  Please note that you said, "That's fine," but that you didn't know how to do it.  Please see where I explained to you how easy it is to do.
