Ride Safe, Be Kind

Earth

« on: June 01, 2012, 06:20:57 AM »

It's getting hot out there.  Temperatures in my part of the country are already approaching triple digits.  Motorcyclists are particularly suseptable to dehydration.  Heat and wind can make jerky out of you in short order.  Remember that alcohol and caffiene are diuertics and will dehydrate you fast.  DRINK WATER COPIOUSLY!  You may also need salt tablets or sports drinks to replenish electrolytes lost to perspiration. (Pedialyte is a great electrolyte replacement drink available in most drug and grocery stores in the baby aisle.) Your urine should be close to clear, copious and fairly frequent.  If you're pissing half an ounce every 12 hours and it looks like Gatorade...you're in trouble.  You won't feel yourself sweating while you ride and onced you get dehydrated it can lead to headaches, confusion, weakness, loss of balance and loss of conciousness.

Drink up and ride safe,

Scott

Good advice. Never thought about the idea of perspiration drying while riding and not realizing the fluids that have been lost.  crazy2 cooldude

Glad I installed a cupholder on my handlebars.  Only problem is the 5 big ice cubes in the cup melted in 90+ degree heat within 30 minutes.  I guess warm water is still better than no water.  I have to find an insulated mug that has a flip top or straw that does not come in a smaller size not much bigger than a can of pop.  Most insulated mugs I have seen are taller and/or wider than I would like to hang onto while riding and drinking.  With my luck, the local police will give me a ticket since I lately have been while say coming into a town on a straight road slowing down flipping up my visor and taking a sip with one hand on the mug and one hand on the handlebars.  I feel it is totally safe in a non-busy environment, but you never know with the local cops writing tickets by the 100's for 10 bucks each for seat belt violations (cagers not wearing seat belts).

If your mouth starts to feel dry, your getting close. Headache, youre there.
We had a couple of tourists die her in the last month because they just dont understand Tucson. Feel free to drink like a Viking, (A little Norse lingo there), letting the water run down your shirt.
When I leave work, I hose off and actually feel cold for the first 5 miles, after 25, youre dry.
Its 5% humidity here and 105 degrees.  One Gatorade to four waters because that has shugars and will dry you out too. DRINK UP. RIDE WET.

I can't recommend the Drink Butler enough. Mine's kept drinks cold for hours even in the hottest heat. The insulated mug has a handle, so you can lift it and drink from it one handed. It can be a bit of a challenge to get the straw up to your mouth if you're wearing a full face helmet, but it's doable...

A few years ago riding back from Frisco across KS with the sun burning on my right leg I stopped at every rest station to fill up a gallon zip loc bag which I then used to drench myself on my back and from the waist down making sure my socks didn't get wet.

That with drinking lotsa water worked for me.

I drink water like a camel anyway.

I carry a camelbak 70oz bladder in my tankbag. Drink it dry and refill as needed. If I'm staying someplace with a freezer, I freeze it and have several hours of cold water.

Last year we carried a gal water jug on the bike. Filled it with ice every gas stop. It was a life saver during the 100 deg days.

Camelback makes a 100 oz bladder which does not have the shoulder straps. It has clips to attach 1" straps to tie it down. I strap it onto the back seat of the Wing for long distance riding. It also has neoprene outer case which helps insulate it. The opening is large enough for ice and waitresses at lunch never mind filling it with fresh ice and water while eating lunch.

I keep a cooler bungied to my left passenger board.  It has a velcro trap door on top  for easy access to the ice & beverages as U are rolling.  I just reach down, grab a cold squirt bottle & wet down my shirt & bandana.  Can stay cool between gas stops.  Cooler keeps ice for a long time.   Did a 7,000 mile ride out west last Aug.  from Sturgis. Fool proof method to ward of dehidration & thirst. Cool

I use a variant of this.  I have a 100 oz Hydrastorm, Blackhawk's version.  I fill it full of ice cubes then pour in a 50/50 mix of Powerade Zero and water.  I wear it under my mesh jacket and run the drinking tube out the neck.  When I feel like taking a sip I stick the tube up inside my flip face helmet, bite down on the valve and drink.

And another thing. If you think riding without a helmet is cooler you can get a sunburn from h----. Nice cool breeze, you don't feel it coming.
