My wife has a video camera that does 720 and 1080   and also regular and wide angle

It is smaller than a pack of cigarettes amazing

I just figured out  how to mount it to my bike just outside on the right of my windshield
so I wont get the glare I had with my camera

How long will it take to fill up a memory card

she just ordered me a 16gig card so how long on 1080 and how long on 720

What resolution to you folks use?

Thanks

1080 is definately high resolution. I saw a dash camera in high def that would record for 10 hours in "high def" ( I dunno what resolution that was)

16 gigs will get eaten pretty quickly me thinks, maybe 4-5 hours?

I just bought a HD Videocam.  The info says at 1080p res, a 2gb SD card will record for 40 min.  You need to use a "High Capacity" and "fast" card, so it can record all the data as quickly as the camera inputs.  Mine says with a Full Charge, the camera will record in 1080p for about 2.5 hrs.  So the higher the resolution, the more battery power it uses, and it will stop recording due to battery life, before the card runs out of empty space.   It would seem your 16gb card is sufficient, unless your battery life is longer than mine.

In addition look at the camera instructions it should say it also depends on the format of the file that the camera uses and if you use the higher resolution it will take more memory to record the same scenes. I have a pen sized camera and it will record 3 hours of video at a ok quality. Most tv is nowhere near 720p more like 420p just to give a idea.

I've got a GoPro HD Hero, and at 960/30fps, I can get about 4.5 hours on a 16 gig card.  I know that doesn't help much because you don't have a 960 option, but if I can do that, you should be able to get another .5-1 hour out of 720.

yeah I was thinking that 720 is probably pretty damn good for most movies. Its not like the mountain is moving, just the bike

I wasnt planning on having it on the whole time on Beartooth or Highway to the Sun but you never really know till you are there.

What kind of camera do you run in the truck? I've been wanting to have a full time cam in my vehicle and would like to know all about your setup. Thanks!

I use a 32gb sd card, so it records for the length of time I run one-way.  I then erase the card, and restart for the trip back.  You can choose the length of each recording file from 1 min,2,3,10 or 15 min segments to reduce the amount of time you'd need to view a file to find an event.  It records each file seamlessly back to back.  Here's a link to it on Amazon.  I bought mine online from another source, and paid a bit less than the price shown here.  Not fancy, but does what I need it to do for my CYA drive each day, coolsmiley

I also mounted this on the windscreen of the bike to check it out, and it worked very well there too  cooldude

Oss,

The camera should tell you how much video the card has room for.

Set the camera to the different settings with the card in and the display screen should give you an estimate of how much time it can fit on the card.

You can "play" with the settings to see what the difference is between 720 and 1080.

The numbers tend to "vary" from manufacturer to manufacturer so it's hard to make any kind of accurate guess.

Thank you everyone..........took a nice movie up to bear mtn and back on the goat trail but need to cover the mic

since the camera sticks out to the right of the fairing I will try a piece of foam and a piece of
black electrical tape to get rid of the wind noise.  Love black electrical tape, it makes great sunscreens for my fullface shoei, holds stuff and is cheap.

I understand that there is a way to put music on the videos when I am done but that is for after my trip is over

I used the 720 sports mode and am pretty sure I will have more than enough memory for each day
Since I am bringing my small acer laptop so I can download at the end of each day Between the 2 memory cars I will have more than enough memories on digital
