Here's how it started.....I was in it in the mid to late 80's....I had a couple of my own articles and helped on a few.....got to develop my own black and white pics in the dark room.....and got to use some of the Lay out tools like you see in this video......I was able to travel on some planes and Amtrak to the "Big Cities" of the North East......loved it!.....

Cool,

Foxfire glows in the dark.

This little project is worthwhile.

If you want some more history, come up one week day to NOrris Tennessee, and I will take you over to

John Rice Irwins Apallachian Musem and you will get a belly full of old timey in that place.

i think of what my parents knew when i was growing up and compare it to what i know, and boy am i dumb, just imagine how stupid my children are since there is a lot that i haven't tought them about what little i do know.

my parents use to mill wheat to make bread, now, if i want to make bread i buy the flour (already bleached out of exsistance) then make white bread with not more then a 1/4 of the healthy nuetrients left from the wheat (even though all the vitamins have been suposably put back into what was bleached out...)  my kids do know how to make bread, they just don't know how to do it the way my parents did.

most kids have no clue where flour comes from, let alone what wheat is.

just out of curiousity, have you seen REAL flour from wheat versus the flour you buy at the store?  real flour has a slight brown tint to it, the stuff you buy at the store is bleach white.  before my parents passed away they had a flour mill (now in my attic) and they made their own flour from wheat, that bread tasted awsome compaired to the italian bread you find at any store today.

My wife still makes her own bread almost every week, she makes it from whole wheat and white whole wheat flour, no bleach....the only store bought bread I get is when I'm on the road and you're right there is no comparison to the taste or texture from one to the other.

OK I'll chime in... I'm the Wife  angel
Yes HB is right I only use 100% Whole Wheat .. And 100% White Whole Wheat that is WW ground super fine ..
I have been baking our own breads for a few years now ..I refuse to buy store bread..
I don't have a bread machine... I'm the machine  2funny
I'll freeze the bread .. I make 4 loaves at a time so I now only have to make it about once a month...
Also make Italian bread too  and freeze it and yeas again 4 loaves.. Then cut in half to freeze..
So there is always bread for Italian suppers...

I throw in a lot of seeds and other whole grains in the breads... angel
A long with Vital Wheat Gluten, handful of Soy flour...
It adds protein and helps the Whole Wheat flour bind and rise with the yeast...

Here's a a bunch of step by step pic on bread making ..
I did just notice that the step are a little mixed ..
But I'm sure ya'll can figure it out...

Man, I really enjoyed the Foxfire books that I read. There's a lot of really cool and forgotten info in them. Just a few years ago, my son Andy discovered them and was as excited about it as I was when I found them.

It's too bad that we lose so much knowledge as we pass from generation to generation.

My Dad never had electricity till after he and Mom were married. My oldest brother Larry was born at home, the doctor came to the house and delivered him.

Dad was ridin' his bicycle home from visiting Mom at her folks farm when they were in school. It was a really dark night, he was ridin' fast because he was passing a graveyard. He met a neighbor with two horses pulling a buggy, rode his bike up between them and scared the heck out of everyone including the horses.

My folks knew how to milk cows by hand, how to make butter, buttermilk and cottage cheese from the milk and a million other things that I'd have little idea how to do.

That was one of the most important reasons for having Foxfire.....to record the knowledge of the Elders before they passed away..... cooldude

When I had my Dairy goats I use to make" Farmer Pot Cheese" ..
One of the easiest cheese's to make.. It's like a cottage cheese...
Milking Cows and Goats  is a blast...
I would bring a cup with me in the wee mornings when is was cold out..
A great way to share time with your critters...
Helping them out by milking and enjoying a warm cup of milk at the same time...

This week I start getting the garden in... HB Tills it up for me ..
And I get the rows and beds made.and the plants in the ground..
Again all done by the signs.. So it can take about a month too get it ALL in...
So JUNE is a Garden time here on the Mountain..  angel
After all we can get a frost in MAY ... So why jump the gun  Roll Eyes...

HB and I was born a hundred years to late...

Sounds like you guys have a very cool lifestyle. We can still get May frost too, had a late frost here bad enough to kill some onions this year. Never had that happen before.

Got my late season corn (silver queen) and pole beans out the day before we finally started getting some rain. I hadn't raised a garden in a few years. Forgot and set the troybilt down with the tines still rotating once. Had to chase it down.  Grin

Yummy!

We (mostly Carolyn) make good home-made bread. We (mostly me) eat dee-lish sandwiches
(they're good even when they're just peanut butter on home made bread) for lunch
most every day...

We use a bread machine, though, and put in 50/50 whole-wheat/white... processed
white flour does have all the nutrition drained out of it, that's why you see "enriched"
on so many flour based processed foods...

Last year we bought the big 6' tiller that sits on the 3 point hitch.. cooldude We also have a big Troy built..
LOL you'll never be able to walk along side of that here..(like in the adds)
So each year we keep adding to the size of the garden  cooldude
This place we  have now ,the last 6/7 yrs .. Had NO garden site !!! Shocked
SO  since 07 we have been working on  the 2 areas .. To get them productive...
Our soil and I use the term loosely  2funny... It's ALL clay and Rocks  tickedoff.. We live on a mountain.

Our old farm had a fantastic site .. an 100 yr old plot.. We had all bottomland up in a mountain back then

well I am glad you two were not born a hundred years ago or I never would have been able to meet you
LD and HB or enjoy your hospitality.

Did I get to eat any of that homemade bread last time I was at the upsanddowns??

We only have 10  (4x8) raised beds here in the front yard.. Its where the sun is all day.

Stan that was very cool about the foxfire project. There is something about very old tools that is
just special, like hand drills and wood nails.  An almost lost art indeed

I bought and read all the Foxfire book YEARS ago!!!!!
Lots of lost arts and know how....  The blacksmithing and stilling always caught my attention....  but how to make a millstone, how to make a barrel or a wagon wheel...  The folks were craftsmen.... Fasinating!!!!!  Plain living... with what you could do with your hands....  I feel it kind of set my course.

Here's a simple bread recipe I use.

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ballymaloe-brown-yeast-bread-recipe/index.html

I find the coarser the flour the better.

Wholemeal wheat of course.

Here's more recipes from the Ballymaloe Cookery School
