http://radio.foxnews.com/toddstarnes/top-stories/nj-buckle-up-your-dog-cat-or-face-fines.html

$1000 fines and criminal charges for not seat-belting your dog or cat in the car? How much do you want to bet someone is getting a kickback from whatever company makes doggie car seats or whatever they are using?

It will probably be the death penalty for taken your dog for a scooter ride soon.

The people with their dogs in their lap while driving ARE a problem (just like texters and talkers) but this is just stupid.

I agree with the law [somewhat].There are more idiots driving around with animals in the back of pickups that are unrestrained .I've even seen children in the same position. In the back of pickups,Its stupid an as far as dogs and little kids in your lap while driving, that is even worse.Imagine what would happen if the air bag went off .Peoples stupidity is what causes the gov. to make these dam laws.i don't like it either but seeing kids and animals getting hurt isn't nice either

I grew up ridin' in the back of pickups, frequently sitting in a lawn chair as were my older brothers while Dad was pulling the boat behind us. My brothers would be drinking beer while I was just wishing I was. They're all gone now and I sure wish I could ride up to the lake one more time with them.

None of em died by falling out of a truck.

As far as dogs ridin' in the back of trucks. I've had several dogs over the years who would ride in the back of my truck unrestrained. I'd go through the "Burger Chef" drive through, buy em a sandwich, unwrap it and hand it to them. I don't remember anybody ever telling me I was stupid for it.

Well behaved dogs in the back of a pickup is fine. Kids in the back? It ain't all that smart when there's a seat with a belt available. But I take my ten year old on the motorcycle and there are people who think I'm dumb for that. There's quite a bit of perspective at play here.

Scheesh.  Now I, and most of my neighbors, are stupid.  My Border Collie goes everywhere around the farm, and to town, in the back of my old pickup.  I do not let her in the new one.  She is smarter than most, if not all, people I know.  Me included.

I know LOTS of farmers/ranchers whose dogs ride in the back of pickups.  Over almost 60 years, I do not know of a SINGLE one who has been hurt.

i think it's an excellent law, this is one way to keep the damn animals out of the drivers seat sitting on that idiots lap.

when ever i pull up to a stop light, and theres that dog in the drivers seat, i bark at it to get it to jump out the window!!  it's funny watching people get ticked off cause their dog's going crazy on their lap!!!

I agree, inside on a drivers lap, becomes a safety hazard for all.  Far different than one sitting on the back seat, or in the back of a pickup.

If we ever actually get to the point we are so restricted that no one can accidentally injure themselves or others we'll be better off dead. And probably praying for death, or would if we were allowed to pray.

Better to live 10 seconds as a free citizen than 100 lifetimes as a mindless drone.

When I was a kid there was a time when dad couldn't afford a car and a truck.  Since the truck was necessary for the farm, if we went to town for anything it was in the back of the truck. He left the sideboards on, so if you fell out it would have to be on purpose.    If big brother would leave us alone we would all be better off.  And dogs never rode inside.  They didn't like it!  Hoser  Smiley

I think it's smart to secure anything heavy that's in the passenger compartment with you that could become a projectile in a crash, to prevent an animal from being on your lap while driving, and to prevent your dog from jumping out of your moving truck box, but laws specifically dealing with these situations?  Other than allowing your dog to interfere with your driving, these other things should be a matter of facing charges only after your neglect has caused harm, either to yourself, your passengers, or your animal.

yesturday there was a woman and two children that got into a car wreck.  the two children were thrown from the vehicle, had they NOT been thrown, they would have been killed in the car.  sure this wasn't a normal accident, like the ones they do on the safety tests, but how do you protect against everything?

nope, have that one already......  my favorite one that was repealed (here in Wisconsin) was the law that said you must honk your horn if you pass another vehicle on the highway.  no one ever thought how that would make city traffic more annoying!!

Heres another good one.Several years ago some idiot in Az. wanted to pass a law requiring motorcycle riders to wear seatbelts and they also brought up the idea of wearing full protective leathers all year in Az.I can see the clothing thing but in the Az. desert at 115 degrees.I guess its one way to get bikers off the roads

I am not allowed to walk my dog to the dog park.  I have to drive there.  The dog park is at the back of a town park.  Been walking there for exercise now that it's warmer and the days are longer, and everytime I get approached by the park staff and threatened with a summonse.  Everytime this happens, I tell them to call the cops, I'll take that ticket!

G, just get some dark glasses and a white cane, and walk him as your seeing eye dog (unless they already know you too well).

Just this morning there is a picture of a young kid sitting in the back seat of a car without a seat or seatbelt on but on the other side was a full gas can and it had a seat belt on .Figure that one out.It was on the yahoo news on the computer. That is the reason we need strict laws.People are dumb.
