I got the paint codes off the inside of the bike.

PB-255P
PB255X

But I guess those are both codes for the BLUE.

We did a test panel on the pearl white from what the paint scanner thingy said, and it's not even close to a match.

Can anyone offer any advise?

Thanks for that.

I don't trust it though.  It's got mine wrong.  Everything I have found thus far says that my blue is "Pearl Coronado Blue".  Which this shows as paint code PB255M.  Mine is PB-255P and PB255X.

Which of the MANY whites and silvers is mine?

Shouldn't the paint code be on the bike somewhere?  Why does mine only show the main color?

Not an answer to your question, but I've ordered two different touch up pens from Colorite for my 1999 Yellow/Ivory using the factory paint codes and neither of them are anywhere close to matching.

There must be some variation in the colors from the factory as I've seen Valks supposedly the same color combo as mine where the Yellow is much different....mine has more of a golden hue where others I've seen are brighter yellow.  The only way I was able to match my aftermarket saddlebags to the bike was to have the auto shop mix the color using their color-match gizmo in the sunlight.  They got all three colors exactly the same, right down to the factory pinstripe.

My point is, if you want a perfect match then you might try to have your paint shop mix a batch...this will also account for paint fade if you are not painting the entire bike.  They can also make a touch up pen.

Just went out and checked my cream and blue 98 and my colour codes were
PB-255P and PB-255Q.

I don't know why the cream isn't on the label.

Did you try the honda cream y173m code?  I looked that up at the colorite website.

From sneaky snake on tech board: PPG Paint:  83861  Pearl Ivory Cream

The paint codes should be under the left side cover on the downtube of the frame.

Right... But both my codes are for Coronado Blue...

Shouldn't there be a code for white too?

Pearl Ivory Cream, Y137P is the factory paint code. It has two colors in it. Check this website halfway down http://www.bike-paint.co.uk/honda%201998.htm.

Why does everyone think this thing is a 1998 blue and CREAM?

it's a 2002.   It's pearl white.

I used the paint codes from this site and gave them to my painter for hard bags and it was spot on. Of course mine is the Blue and Cream!!   Grin  Hope that helps.

I wonder why the paint scanner didn't work???  Maybe it is malfunctioning or needs calibrated or something??  When I needed paint for my saddlebags, nobody could cross-reference the silver paint code other than ColoRite, but they want an arm and a leg for their paint.  NAPA had an optical scanner and scanned the paint and matched it to a factory Lexus silver and it matches up perfectly.

I think because it's a two part paint. There is a base coat and a top coat. My painter wasn't real happy with that after his original quote.

I apologize to everyone for being short... I am just aggravated about it, but I think I got her licked now.

We did the paint scanner, and it didn't match at all.  The paint people say it doesn't work on PEARL paint very good.

I really do appreciate everyone's help.  Your help got me to where I need to be.  I hope.

The Blue paint was expensive too.  $179 for a QUART from CarQuest.  Holy crap Battman!

Hey jarhead, if you think CarQuest is high, go price a Quart for Infiniti Silver Pearl Metallic.     That is the color I put on my trailer a couple of years ago.    $323 a quart and he gave me his wholesale price.   Paint ain't cheap when ya get into the pearls, the silver flake and etc.    But it sure do look pretty now.

Hey jarhead, ...

Semper fi Brother.

Uh, RJ, Jabba is a bubble head, or some such thing.

I was no help, Jabba, because when mine were painted we didn't find a satisfactory paint code for the Pearl White.  I provided the painter with  a fender section and he matched it perfectly (or at least as perfectly as my eyes can discern.).

My painter is a part timer... But seems like he is a perfectionist.  We shall see.

And you're right... I failed the last test when I tried to join the Marines... The hat would NOT thread onto my head no matter how hard we tried...  Wink

I had to join the Navy instead and learn how to run nuclear power plants, and I in fact DID ride a submarine.

I know you guys (Marines) love it when anyone points out that you're Dept of the Navy too.

I know I know... the Men's Dept.   Roll Eyes

I appreciate you guys...

I appreciate you guys...

And I appreciate you guys.

I toured a docked (Russian) submarine when I was in Long Beach.  Even without the thousands of feet of water above me I got an uneasy, claustrophobic feeling.  It looks really cool in the movies, but I'm not sure I have in me what it would take to live aboard one of those tubes.

Good fortune on the paint.  I'm sure it will turn out great.

I just looked on HDL, and it looks to me like the stripe is actually a decal. They show it in the picture, but don't list it in the parts list. (numbers 3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 10). That would at least explain why it doesn't show as a paint code on the bike.

Pearl paint is a tough match, you don't want a test panel. You want to spray what they call a let down test panel.   Take your test panel prime it, then mask it like you would shingle a roof. Top part of panel shows say 2 inches of primer, then there is masking paper covering the next 2 inches of primer. Do about 3 more sheets of masking 2 inches apart going down the panel.   Spray out your color on the top primer section, wait for it to flash off, peel the next piece of masking paper off, exposing the next 2 inches of primer. spray your second coat over the whole exposed section, let it flash off. Remove the next piece of masking paper, repeat the full coat over what is showing. repeat this till you reach the bottom of your test panel.  Let it dry, or clear it ,how ever you are going to finish the paint job.  Now take the test panel and hold it next to the part of the bike you are trying to match. Starting at the bottom work your way up the panel looking for the best match. When you find the best color match. count up from the bottom of the let down panel how many 2 in stripes you are from the bottom of the test panel.  That will be how many coats of your pearl it will take to get the same effect on the new paint job to match.      Hope that makes sense to you.

The transition of the stripe is a decal... but the body of the stripe itself is paint.

I think we got it licked.

Thanks everyone.  I am STOKED to get my bags back and mounted... I have the bag mounts on now, as he wants to MOUNT the bags on the bike to lay out the stripes... and it looks a little weird with the bag mounts and no bags...

You can tell people it was a President's motorcycle, and that's where the Secret Service would stand  on the side when he was riding.  Roll Eyes

Or....... It is a amphibious motorcycle, and those are the skis

That seems to be the code for the racing stripe scheme.  The code I posted earlier is for the white stripe.
