Dear Mr. Robinson:
Thank you for taking the time to share your view regarding H.R. 904, a bill that would prohibit the Secretary of Transportation from providing grants to state and local governments for the purpose of creating motorcycle-only checkpoints.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ("NHTSA") created the Motorcycle Law Enforcement Demonstration Program, which provides grants to states for motorcycle-only checkpoints that ensure motorcyclists helmets and exhaust systems comply with the latest Department of Transportation regulations. These checkpoints do not prevent motorcycle crashes.
The most effective way to prevent motorcycle crashes, and save lives needs to be rider education and increased awareness. Motorcycle-only checkpoints are outrageously intrusive and do nothing to address crash prevention. The Secretary of Transportation and the NHTSA continue their efforts to use big government tactics to accomplish their goal of national mandatory helmet laws, a measure I am vehemently oppose. With limited resources a prohibition on any future funding for motorcycle-only checkpoints is a common sense measure that will help ensure the rights of motorcyclists, that I support.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact me about the motorcycle-only checkpoints. For updates on this and other legislative priorities, please visit
