I decided to hook up my printer that has sat on my desk while I was over the road for 5 years. it works but of course the cartridges are dried up, to replace both color and black it would set me back more then double what I paid for the dumb thing in the first place!  so I bought a HP el cheapo, and made DANG sure the cartridges are fairly cheap to replace. I'd like to say lesson learned, but I know I'll fall for some kind of ruse like this again I saved about $20 buying a new printer over replacing the little bits-o-plastic.  |

Welcome to the printer tossing club. found out the same thing a few years ago with our Dell printer. Cheaper to replace it than to reload it. We got a Kodak from walmart. Both cartridges together are about $40 for a reload.

Printers are not the only items to be used as a loss leader for consumable either.
Here's one for you; I'm typing this on an original Intel MAC that's running OSX 10.4.11 (very old version of the OS, let's put it that way). Recently Firefox updated and the new version isn't compatible with my old OS meaning that I either have to pony up to bring my OS up to date or buy a New Mac. I decided to use Safari (a different browser altogether) instead. Eff you Steve Jobs.

planned obsolescence gotta love it the combo packs for new ink run about $30, a much better deal. I think I should've held off and bought a printer that you can reload the ink from bottles instead of a little plastic box  |

Same here. I bought a Epson 1280 photo printer. It's now 10 years old. The original ink cartridges are 'way expensive, $28 for the black and $32 for the six color one., cheapest price online. Unfortunately, the Epson was too expensive to start with so i have to keep it. In addition, Epson has a neat way to make you buy more cartridges. If just one of the cartridges runs out of ink, the printer shuts down. There are ways around it but Epson has some type of sensor built into the cartridges that keep me from bypassing the shut down.
The Epson has outlasted a cheap Canon 60 printer that I bought, The Canon cost me more in cartridges than the printer but soon quit working altogether.

when you buy a new printer it come with the cartridges about 1/4 full and will last lets say a month or two..when you buy new cartridges they will last about a year,,,

I have this sneaking suspicion as it's DL'ing... sure enough, I need to be running 10.5 or higher. To top it all off Garmin updates are now like 50 bucks now. I may just say screw it and buy a new one since lifetime maps are only an extra 20 bucks. Of course I'm sure they're engineered to break shortly after the warranty period is up. I'm adding Garmin to my list of companies that need to be treated like al Qaeda. |

We bought a B/W laser, since we rarely need color prints all the time. Takes a long time to run out that bad boy. The color sees occasional use, mostly for the scanner. But we use it enough to keep the heads clear. Yes, I checked out pricing of color cartridges before I bought the printer.

Ditto! Laser is the way to go. You are better off using an online photo service, and using a B/W Laser for regular printing. |

Ditto! Laser is the way to go. You are better off using an online photo service, and using a B/W Laser for regular printing. Agree, we usually get some printed off when one of the print services runs thier specials. I can't touch the sale prices. |
