In all cars? or all new cars?      link wouldn't open or cut and paste for me.  If it is all cars, watch out they will want to do it here next.

This, this, a thousand times this...

As to the article, here's a link to it for ya' that should work:

http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1073607_france-decrees-mandatory-breathalyzers-in-all-cars-by-july-1

Interestingly enough, the law doesn't require the breathalyzer to be hooked up to the car in any way. In fact, it doesn't even have to be used. The law just says you have to have one in the car, that's it.

the  way i see it, there is a far higher chance of dieing in a motorcycle accident than in a car so lets start by banning motorcycle ownership.( hey we have to protect them from themselves) then lets ban living past 65 because it puts undue burden on the younger members of society, oh yes, and those that live in hurricane susceptible areas? well they need to pay actual insurance rates rather than having their risk mitigated over the pool as a whole. that should be a good start. soon we can reduce these pesky people to serfs living off the land and owed by us wealthy people, that would be a good step forward in protecting them from themselves !!  uglystupid2

don't you know the stupid people have more rights than the sane ones.
just wait until one of them loses a loved one to a drunk. then they'll change their minds.

because you lose someone to a drunk driver does not give anyone the right to impose on mine or anyone elses freedoms, the only person who should lose their freedom is the person who committed the crime.you will cry wolf when the gov. controls your evey move

To anyone who's lost someone due to the actions of a drunk driver, you have my condolences... Sincerely, you do...

But, to react in a way where you want big government to control everyone because of the actions of a few is the same thing that Sarah Brady did, and has given us the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence...

Think carefully before you say "There oughta be a law"... There already is, and those who break it should be punished, but just like more gun control isn't the answer to gun crimes, things like making all cars have breathalyzer interlocks isn't the answer to a few idiots that get sloshed then get behind the wheel.

it's all crazy talk. next thing you know they will want to ban all religion. after all more people have died because of religious conflict than just about anything else!  my mother had a friend that died because she wasn't a member of Islam. she was a catholic so i guess we need to ban Christianity! and she was killed when an Airplane Hit the building she was working in, should we ban aircraft?

The problem with the law is.......they usually don't catch the damn drunk until AFTER they've killed someone.

Good one.  Sterotype much?   Roll Eyes

Excuse me for my intorlerance, but I have absolute zero tolorance for anyone stupid enough to partake and get behind the wheel or the handlebars.  You have every right in the world to drink if you want to, but you have absolute zero right to endanger everyone else you encounter while you're being a dumbass drunk.

Everyone else's right to live far outweights your right to drink alcohol.

The problem with the law is.......they usually don't catch the damn drunk until AFTER they've killed someone.

Doing a little research, in 2008 the state of California reported 214,828 DUI arrests, and 1198 alcohol related fatalities (Of which 1029 involved a BAC of 0.08 or higher).

So.... Going by the numbers, they ARE catching the damn drunks before they kill someone, they're just not doing anything about it.

So, how about requiring these interlocks in repeat offender's vehicles, instead of trying to shove it on EVERYONE?

Not stereotyping, just an outloud expression,I agree no one has the right to take another persons life,But you cant control innocent peoples lives because of a few stupid people.WE do not live in a perfect world, more laws will not make it perfect.Even a hundred new laws will not stop drunk drivers.maybe they should outlaw cars, trucks and motorcycles,It would be hard to kill someone riding a big wheel drunk.

Serk, I agree with your points but with a few clarifications.

More effective application of existing DUI laws would be a big step forward.

Repeat offenders?  One offense would be sufficient as far as I'm concerned.  Incidentally, the French are not requiring interlocks, only the device.  I guess they want to be certain everyone has the means to properly assess their own condition?

Lastly I'm strongly in favor of letting the French decide what is the size and solution to their own problem.

How about 12 months in jail for first offense, no probation, no suspended time!

might help, but wont eliminate the problem. you will always have the people who think they are smarter than the law and will never be caught.
