Geocaching, the nerdiest hobby on the planet. with words and phrases in common use like "using the force" or "muggles"  oh well don't care, I dug out my old garmin e trex vista c plugged in some new batts and updated the software added a browser plug in so I can go paperless (kinda why I just replaced my printer  oh well) and now it's cache time! me and the wife are walking for the exercise so might as well  |

Please forgive me if this isn't a good question because I really dont know much on the subject but why couldn't you use a i phone to do the same thing?
you can, but I'm the only one I know that STILL has a phone from the last century  you've heard of the smart phone? mine rides the short bus |

you can, but I'm the only one I know that STILL has a phone from the last century you've heard of the smart phone? mine rides the short bus Hey Robert, my friend Tom has a partner with that kind of phone. I have an old flip phone that's probably at least 10 yrs. old and works fine, so I don't bother to replace it. You should hear my girls fuss at me, telling me it's the 21st century and to get with it. I tell them it does exactly what I got it for....it makes calls and takes calls. Also takes pretty good pictures as well. Rita and I pay less per month for both of our "old" phones than most pay for one with all the gadgets. The deputy down the street told me to never get rid of it, because if I'm ever stopped for speeding they can't look at the GPS and see how fast I was going. Told him doesn't matter, I hardly ever have it on anyway...much to Rita's annoyance. |

Actually you can. It's big news today that Google and Apple both are effectively killing off the standalone GPS. Personally I'm not giving mine up yet. |

Actually you can. It's big news today that Google and Apple both are effectively killing off the standalone GPS. Personally I'm not giving mine up yet. Them there smart cell phones are only as good as the cell signal they get. There's quite a bit of this land that isn't yet inundated with those waves, but in those places, my garmin still works fine. |

I have two GPS's that I use for Geocaching, a Oregon 450 and a Garmin 62S, 2 great units. the smart phones will show geocaches in real time, the GPS units you have to download caches to.

HA HA!! i havent thought about that in years, looked up on top of the desk and there it was covered in dust,, my Magellan Meridian Platinum...gonna have to put some batteries in it and see if it still works,, need to see if my geo caching page is still there,,,

ROFL (yes, I can still read a map...and carry them for the "just in case" cases too - usually pick one up for free at the state welcome center when I first venture into a new area) |
