Hello all.  I need a bit of help with my interstate fairing.  I was trying to change my windshield which required the removal of the inter side of the fairing.  When I tried to remove the plastic inter panel 4 of the 6 screws on the right side just spin arround.  I can tell from the left side that the screws mate into brass threads on the insdie of the outer fairing.  While I suspect that brass threads have become stripped in their plastic housings, I can't seem to pull them out for replacement.

I've tried using pressure by placing a wedge (OK it was a butter knife) beteween the inter and outer parts.  This removed one screw brass threads and all .  There still 3 more to go.

Does anybody know a good way to remove those. I thought about drilling the screw heads but I'm a little afraid of penetrationg the liner or having the drill bit scratch the liner.

Any help or thoughts woudl be appreciated.

Just keep doing what you are doing.
I think you will find the replacement part numbers
in Shop talk.
Or ask here,it is a common thing.
After replacement keep anti seize on them.

This is a very common problem.  Here is some info on a windshield swap.

What to remove:
1. Start with the right and left inner fairing panels.  There are four phillips head screws per side.  The wind deflectors don't have to come off.  The speakers will unplug so you don't have to let them dangle.
2. Now you can get to the four phillips head screws that hold the chrome windshield valance.  They are on the inside of the fairing and you'll need a good light and probably a stubby screwdriver.
3. Once the chrome valance is off, everything else removes from the outside.  There are four shoulder bolts (8mm) with rubber bushings that hold the windshield on.

What to watch out for:
1.  Most likely at least one of the phillips screws on the inner panels will be bound to the brass insert that it threads into.  If you get one that just turns and turns, don't just keep spinning it or you will wallow out the plastic.  Go ahead and get your fingers behind the panel and pull forcibly while turning.  This will strip the brass insert out of the plastic, but you can epoxy it back in with JB Weld or any two part epoxy.  "Paint" a little epoxy in the hole (with a toothpick) and give the insert a very light coat and shove it in.  Best to let it set up.   A little anti-seize on the screw when you put it back helps keep from spinning the insert the next time as well.

2.  The rubber bushings have a thin side and a thick side.  I don't know if it makes a difference, but you may want to note the orientation so you get them back in the same.

That's it.  Just reverse the order for reassembly.

The brass insert/anchors in the fairing are part number 90316-MJ1-000.

The phillips head bolt that you see from outside the speaker housing is part number 90107-MBY-000.

Just do the same with all of those screws that won't come out.  Steady pressure pulling the inner panel as you try unscrewing the screws.  They will eventually come out with the "insert" on the screw.  You should be able to gently hold that insert with a pair of pliers as you back out the screw.  If you squeeze it too hard, you will destroy it.

Now, you can glue the inserts back into the fairing using JB Weld.  You may have to clean the outside surface of the inserts with a small wire brush.  Put anti-seize on the threads of the screw...gently screw it into the insert....apply JB Weld to the outside of the insert and a little inside the boss in the fairing and then push into place.  You are putting the anti-seize on the screws so in case the JB Weld works it's way into the threaded area, the screw won't get Stuck.  When putting things back together, only tighten those screws until they stop.  They are "shoulder screws" and when they seat, they are tight.  If you crank down on your screwdriver,  you may have the same problem next time.

I didn't have much luck gluing the inserts back in. Mine striped out again the next time I tried to remove them and I did use anti seize. Might have been too wallowed out. I went to the hardware store and found different size threaded inserts. Had to drill out plastic very carefully, bought it worked for me. Good luck, you will find a way.  Firefighter
