Last Tuesday my wife and I went to a lake cabin that we’ve been going to for the last twenty years.  She drove the van and I had my cycle, mainly because she will be staying till the end of the week and I had to work tonight. Well, I bought a cheap CB radio from a garage sale just so that when we do a trip like this, we can talk to each other.  She’s got the cheap one in the van, and I bought one for my cycle two years ago for $400.

On the way up we stopped in a small town called Minong.  If you’ve ever heard of “Jack Links Jerky”, well that’s were it’s made.  As we left town she took the lead in the van.  No more then a quarter mile out of town I see a deer jump up from the brush heading towards the highway!!  I yelled on the CB “DEER-DEER!!!”  And I knew that stupid animal was going to jump in front of the wife’s van!!  Just as I thought it did!!  But the wife had slammed on the breaks missing it by a few yards!!  This stupid animal runs across the highway through the medium and gets hit by a semi trailer heading in the opposite direction!!  By this time the deer was directly to my left, and I had a good look at it getting hit since it was only about 10 yards away!!    It jumped in the air thinking it would avoid the semi, but that just put it high enough to be smacked my one of the logs on the trucks trailer.  it spun around in the air, hit the ground and slid down the highway kicking up gravel as it slid into the ditch.

I asked my wife if she’d seen the deer, and she said no because she was looking in the rear view mirror making sure I got onto the highway alright and that had I not warned her she would have defiantly hit the animal!!  That might have not been a bad thing, since we have been looking to replace the vehicle, but then again, I’ve heard of incidences were a deer has killed the driver ‘cause it crashes through the windshield, which would not have been good.  But, I figure that had I not had a CB radio on my cycle, things would have definitely been different.

By the way, I’ll post some AWSOME pictures I took on the lake!!  This place is extremely desolate!  There’s only about a dozen or so homes on it, and none of ‘em are visible from were we fish!!  There are about 6 bald eagles that call this lake home, it isn’t uncommon to see one swoop down and grab a fish from the water, or to see one fly by your boat.  Not to mention the loons, black bear, turtles lying eggs on the shore, and other cool wild life!!  My wife told me today that when they were out fishing they saw a black bear swimming in the lake!!  Of course she didn’t have a camera for that one!!

Very good outcome.  Thats the one hazard of riding I feel like you cant really train or prepare for.  You can look, but you can't always see.  Glad it worked out for all parties like it did even the rat

I'm glad You and your wife are OK and that there was nothing more than a increase in your blood pressure.  You're correct when you say that it's desolate up there but as I recall, there's some good riding there too.
