Sugar & I would appreciate your help plannin' this trip. We're leavin' Wed 6/27, gotta be back Sun. 7/8.
Never been past Doughton Park, MP 240 on the BRP.
I know there are some regulars here north east of that. Lookin for good places on or off the main line.
Will probably stay at Doughton Wed. nite (unless y'all know someplace better) and then wingin' it.
Anyplace ya can swim or tube is a plus!
Pullin' Cyclemate trailer with all the campin gear, and darkside, so paved is preferred.
Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Peace, Whiskey & Sugar.

The D-Day Museum in Bedford is incredible.
As far as camping and swimming/tubing, you should check out Luray, VA.  It is somewhere around the 33 mile marker on skyline drive.  There is lots of options for tubing/swimming in the Shenandoah River.  It is a little pricy, but Luray Caverns is pretty impressive.  There is a campground at the foot of the mountain, and one on the other side of the valley that is on the river.  I'm from Luray, so I am a little biased, but it is a beautiful area.  Lots of good rides in the area, and lots to see.

I'm interested in the same info.  I have a 10 day vacation at the end of July and was thinking of riding the BRP from end to end.  Wife has to work, so just me.  Any info on good sights, good eating, etc., would be appreciated!   cooldude

There's Willville motorcycle campground at Meadows of Dan, VA (mm 177).

There's camping with a lake at Montebello, VA (mm 26).

There's camping and swimming at Sherando Lake (mm 16).

The Skyline Drive has multiple camping areas, I don't know about the swimming opportunities there.

There are alot of places to camp along the Shennandoah River.

I'll pm you my cell #, if you like I'll be glad to hook up  and share some wind with you guys.

This place was nice!

I did stay at Meadows of Dan......It is ok.  Probably wouldn't go back.  I'm finding I much prefer the "primitive spots"......

Okay, so here's Sugars take on this little adventure in the makin'.
1) would rather ride like 4377 to get somewhere, & settle in.
2) Somewhere better have some water to splash around in!
3) Willin' to ride like 4377 to get back, as long as I don't try to do Skyline Dr. & BRP in one day. (There was a time when I'm sure I could of done it but I wont risk the attempt with Sugar on the back & pullin' the trailer.)
4) She'll grill &/or camp stove for us (& anyone helpin' find this "perfect spot" that shows up) BUT............ She aint doin' no dishes!!!!!!!!!!!!

5) I'm buyin' disposable EVERYTHING!!!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!

And a special thanks to 3fan4life for havin' the intestinal fortitude to VOLUNTEER to try to help me pull this off. U da man Mark!

Did I mention I thought we were goin' ridin'?  Cheesy
Peace, Whiskey.

P.S. Thanks jj, we're lookin' at Luray too. 'preciate ya!

There are plenty of great places along the Blue Ridge, Willville Motorcycle campground is a good place to camp, showers, very clean, snacks and if you want a biscuit for breakfast, Will is a biker and a good guy....

Peaks of Otter has a good restaurant and a little further going north they have a campground...check out Mill Mt. Zoo when you get near Roanoke, Va.

If you get off where US 58 and the Blue Ridge cross you can run down to Mt. Airy, N.C. and check out Mayberry...Andy Griffith's show was filmed there and you can go through the jail and such...

Tuggle's Gap also have a decent restaurant and a lot of bikes stop there.....

Stop and get a parkway map and it will show all the attractions along the Pkwy...

exit 248 Laurel Springs, N.C. has a biker hang out called Freebornes, you can get a meal and beer, they also have a camp ground next door....

Have fun, which I'm sure you will and if you have any mechanical problems while you're here in Va. give me a call and we'll help you out...that goes for you too Dave.

Bonnie and I stayed at Peaks Of Otter on our way to the DOTS rally in JohnsonCity

We had stayed 1st nite at a cheap motel in Front Royal which is the top of the Skyline Drive

Otter is like mile 88 I think on the BRP

We got there before dark and walked around the lake, deer just about close enough to touch with no fear of people, tons of bats flying around once it got dark  Rooms were ok  Food was outstanding but price was up there. Worth the experience to say you have done it IMHO   If you are camping each nite maybe treat yourself to the one nite there if you can get a reservation online ahead of time
