I can only help ya in the SD side of it. It is a nice road. When you leave Deadwood/Lead its nice. Nice long sweepers. You will come to a stop or T in the road. Right is Spearfish Canyon, a must. Left is 85. At the point or left is where some of Dances with Wolves was filmed. I'll be watching for responses cause we thought about doing a loop on this road.

If you've not ridden these you could take Hwy 40 from I 40 up and over the Berthoud Pass and then onto Rocky Mtn National park

I-70, Paul.  I-40 is just a wee but farther south. Cheesy

But I agree, up through Winter Park, and then up to Rock Mtn National Park is a must.  Once you get to Estes Park, then go east to Loveland...

Sorry, cant help ya on anything that far south.
Expect-Storms, sun, wind, pheasant, deer/ antelope, and more wind.
As far as the heat goes in SD its not bad. Its not as humid as it is here east of the Missip. In the plains we have had temps from 75-100 deg. The heat never wore me down as much as the winds did. I stay off I-90 anymore. Just bring chap stick and sun block. Long sleeves are good to. Once in awhile we will wear a bandanna over our face to help with the heat. Wear something on your head. I wear a cheap visor like they wear in golf. Doesn't have the wind lift like a full hat does. I'll also wear a bandana under it since I'm shy of hair up top. If you wear a helmet then I'm not sure what to say. I roasted in my 3/4 in 06. Never again. For you or the Misses, soak a bandana in some cold cooler water and wrap it around your neck. Yes, I carry a crap load of bandanas!  Evil Someone will let ya use there cooler water along the way.
I never been hot in the Hills. Cold, but never hot. You should be good there.
We have done anywhere from 500-700 mile days in the IA, NE, SD heat with no prob. You never know, you might like it so much you won't make IZ! See ya at the B/G ride!
