All,
Once again I have a petcock issue... I have replaced the cover set twice and vacuum line once...
The bike will run out of fuel at half a tank and will run again when you switch to reserve, which to me says the vacuum is weak and the weight of the gas is helping to open the valve..
So heres the deal....
How many of you have switched the stock to full manual and how did you do it????
I dont have the $100 ish for a Pingle and from what I've read on here , moding the stock petcock to manual only basically does the same thing...
Opinions? I will eventually add the Dan Marc, but I just want to get the bike running right until I can stock up some cash for the Dan Marc....

Have you checked your tank vent line for kinks?

Yep,
I just got back last week from a 1500 mile weekend trip and no problems til I was near home (in stop and go traffic at half a tank) and in the garage (stumbling on idle).... Then last Friday went out to a meeting about 20 miles away and no problem til I got back on the bike to go home and she started ,but died halfway out of the parking lot.. would run but only with the revs up... die at idle... switched to reserve and ran better but was stumblin'...
So I ran her home as fast as i could and pulled the tank..... all was good on the outside....

If it runs when the revs are up but not at idle it sounds like something other than the petcock, no fuel no revs. Too lean- vacuum leaks, too rich- flooding. We must have better petcocks here in West Aus as we have not seen any petcock diaphragm failures amongst several bikes including an original 96/97 with over 300,000 K's on it. Cheers Steve

I made my stock valve manual about 5 yrs ago now and still have had not problems from it. I just turn it off every time.

You can almost had a pingel with the $$ since you replaced the cover set twice!

BRADVALK... get rid of that piece of garbage stock fuel valve, and go with a pingle full manual fuel valve.....yes i have one on each of my valks, and love them. you will not need a dan marc solenoid if you can remember to shut off the pingle EVERY time you cut off the engine. so far this hasn't been a problem, because almost all of my earlier bikes had a manual petcock. look around....i have seen the pingle on sale for around 80 some dollars....good luck.

I'm with Goose and Fudgie, get a Pingel 1311. I'm like Goose, both my Valks have Pingels. In fact, that was the first thing I did to my I/S when I got it. Marty

A Dan Marc instead of a Pingle.
Seems to me to be a conflict in thinking here.
I mean, just exactly what are you really wanting to do?
The reliability will rest with the Pingle.
If it's simply laziness, forgetfulness, dementia,,,, then maybe the Dan Marc would be the best choice.

Save your pennies and break open the piggy bank when you have enough for the Pingle.. Just develop a 'pre-flight/ post-flight' mental checklist and don't look back.. Everytime the right hand goes for the key, the left goes for the fuel valve..

I like the idea of a manual shut off AND an automatic additional safety... I have always been forgetful... Hell, I've left the key on from dropping the kickstand in gear to shut it off and walk away once in a while ..... And I rode a Wing for 16+ years and never touched the petcock (yes I know different design and fuel pump) so I am used to not having to hit the petcock every time I get off...
My thinking was, if I switch the stock to manual... that eliminates the vacuum issue and then add the Dan Marc later as a back up... no need for a Pingle and I would now still have a dependable manual valve... as most of what people said here that have done it to the stock and what I have read.....
So I'd save my pennies for the Dan Marc (coupe of weeks or so) and still be able to ride for now with the modded petcock..... doing the Pingle AND the Dan Marc would be overkill in my mind...

Did you change anything other than the valve? Add a filter or anything in the line?

' still have a dependable manual valve' .. Well , I disagree, but thats OK.. To each his own..
'A little forgetful' .. Well, I certainly understand that.. And it is tough to teach an old dog new tricks,, I'm one of many examples..

Fudgie... You have the vacuum operated Pingle......?????? From what I read here , most say the have just the manual Pingle and have to turn it off each time.... which for a forgetful person like me could be the road to hydro lock...... Ideally the carb floats would keep the gas from the cylinders if you do leave the petcock open... its just when you have open petcock for whatever reason and the floats stick that you have Hydrolock...... So that being said... How many have the Vacuum operated petcock and how many the manual? I have looked at the stock petcock and when you remove the vacuum guts... you have a manual valve and it functions just like any manual petcock.... when its "off ' no gas can flow..... and "On" and "reserve" still work as they should... I don't see any reason why a modded to manual petcock would be any less dependable than a manual Pingle???? Maybe I am wrong but a valve is a valve and in all the petcock failures I have read about, it was always the vacuum diaphragm and never the actually valve assembly itself..... Gryphon... I did read your mod, but i also saw one on completely removing the guts and using the outside of the diaphragms as an "O" ring to seal the cover..... I like that idea because over time that diaphragm that is already compromised may break further because of the spring tension and cause pieces of rubber or the parts themselves to clog the fuel system... just my belief in the K.I.S.S. principle. SO the choice as I see it to keep the safety option of a passive way to close the fuel supply is either a vacuum operated system or an electrically operated system in addition to a manual petcock..... I already have the tank off and the JB weld is drying in the back cover (I kept the last one from the last cover set I bought so if I decide to give the regular setup another chance -not likely!- I can) so I can ride on Sunday.. So , i would really appreciate any further discussion because I want to do this right the first time because taking off the tank is a pain in the ass and a chance to ding it up? This might also help anyone else in the future. Brad

Brad, I have the manual one. I'm usually good about turning it off but I do forget. Had it for about 8 yrs not with no probs. I do run alot of cleaner thru the tank, usually once a month.

This might also help anyone else in the future. Brad Brad, the Pingels in my Valks are both manually operated. Even if you convert your stock petcock to manual operation, the diaphragm will still be in there. It separates the vacuum side from the fuel side. If you remove it, you won't be able to control fuel flow plus the petcock will leak like a sieve. If you leave it in and the diaphragm develops a pinhole, you're back in the boat you're in now. The problem you described in your original post tell me and others you need to chunk it and install another petcock. Marty

If you convert the stock one to manual you remove the diaphram conpletely and you still have all the functions of on, off, and res. I just replaced the dia. with a thick piece of gasket material and bolted it back together. Some people JB Weld up the vac port and the weep hole and then just use an o ring to seal the two half. I don't see the reason for buying another manual fuel valve when the stock one can be made manual and it fits the opening and is easy to reach. My has served me well for over 5 yrs since it was converted.

To answer your original question; I have converted the stock petcock to manual on both of my Interstates. I also use the Dan Marc shutoff valve. I have used this setup for several years and it works. When you convert the petcock throw away everything on the vacumn side and install a plate and gasket in place of the parts thrown away. I also use an inline fuel filter.

I don't consider the stock petcock to be a reliable "off"/"on" mechanism.
The detent that you should be able to feel is very slight to non-existent.
That not withstanding, I like the "off"/"on" of the Pingel because they are at opposite ends of the travel of the lever which give an absolute feedback when turning it!

All....
Finally got to pull the tank today.....
Petcock was not the issue...... Vacuum line was. It slid right off as soon as I lifted the tank..... might have worked loose or not put on correctly when I had the tank off a few weeks ago to do some accessory wiring...... D'OH!
Had A new one from Redeye and no problems now..
I did test the petcock since I had already pulled the tank... it would open fine with barely any vacuum applied.... drained half the tank.... no problem..... pulled it out and screen was brand new.... Applied vacuum and it was fine when I blew air thru it.. opened and closed no problem.
Put it all together and rode 200 miles with no issue...
I will stick with this for now....... but a Dan Marc is in probably in the winter update list....
Thanks for all you help..
Brad
