Hi,

I am replacing the old black slinky radiator hose cover with the OEM stainless steel one.

I did a search to see if any body had any install advice, but I did not find it.

Do I have to drain the coolant to install it?

Also FWIW I noticed the OEM parts catalog lists the stainless steel one under the Interstates( and maybe others) but not 99 tourers. Probably reflects which bikes came with which slinky originally.

It seems like a fairly inexpensive upgrade HDL for around $25.

I could not tell the difference from looking at the diagram or the description, I did notice the parts number was different, but unless you specifically know that the item number is for the stainless steel it is hard to tell.

Just passing it along...probably common knowledge..lol

Thanks

No need to drain or remove any hoses. I just took the open end and started to feed it around the hose until the whole thing was on.

I wondered about that too. I don't know why Big Mike would have one listed at $65 if they were easy to get, but I
did a search on the archives and believed I saw people talking about getting them from Honda as recently
as this year...

I have purchased a few things from Big Mike and love them, that said he has a few things listed that are overpriced and you can still get from HDL or other suppliers. Petcock, alternator cover, radiator side covers and radiator slinky are all things that I have purchased from HDL in the last year that Mike says are discontinued. Make sure you check first.

I saw a  stainless steel slinky on Ebay and I bought it thinking it was an accessory since mine came with a black slinky.

I did not pay a fortune but a bit more than I would have through HDL.

After the fact I did my homework here on our excellent VRCC archieves using the search feature.

I learned rather quickly that in 98 Honda added the black slinky to the standard and tourer and in 2000 it was changed over to the stainless steel for all models and continued from there.

So, I scurried off to the parts fiche, which being in black and white did not help me, as both the 98 and 99  slinkys looked identical to the 00 and up, although one cost more.

In the meantime I received my stainless steel  slinky and it had the part number, so I did a reverse look up through HDL OEM site

19123-MBY-000.
  $27.72

On a similar note I have had my 99 for 5 years and I did not realize that it was supposed to have a Tourer emblem on the windshield hardware. I had seem other Tourers without it and I had seen one with it but thought it someone just put it there as an aftermarket touch.

Back to the VRCC which led me to a link from rattlebars.

http://www.rattlebars.com/rp/rpage13.html

Here I learned that the emblem was not on the 97 Tourers, but only 98 and up.

So,

Back to the parts fiche, and the emblems for the saddlebags and windshield look the same, but one is much more expensive.

Through the archives I learned that the one for the windshield is curved.

I found one for a great price.

Moral of the story( for me at least)

Do my homework with the VRCC archives using the search engine.

Purchased mine from HDL. Disconnect the lower hose after draining the coolant and slide on your new SS slinky. They look good!
