So I'm pulling the back wheel off the Interstate to change the tire. Done it several times, BUT...this time the final driven flange stayed in the final drive unit. So I can't get the wheel off. It's hanging there hung up on the final driven flange.

I looked at the shop manual, considering removing the final drive, but if I read it right, the drive shaft is attached to that. So it can't be removed without the wheel out of the way. Any suggestions?

Push the wheel back on

then use a big screwdriver under the final drive you will see a hole look up in there......you can pry the flange out as you seperate the wheel from teh final drive and make the flange stay with the wheel

Thanks for the reply. I figured that was the only way. Might need some help pushing the wheel back on.

So there's nothing wrong with the wheel? This is the first time I've ever seen anything like this (life's education continues lol) and was worried the wheel had issues.

It will be very difficult without reinserting the axle.

Of course, leave the brake plate and spacer out.

No, this does happen, and just because the flange stuck to the final drive does not necessarily mean anything is wrong.  However, check the drive dampeners well, if they are worn the flange is too loose and this happenes.

THis can also happen if the spline teeth are dry and rusted, but I have had this happen on two different bikes and nothing was wrong to cause it.

RickyD is right putting the axle back in should make it easier, but I didnt, just stuck it back on by hand.....do what you have to, but dont panic, its no big deal.

FYI....You can remove the 4 nuts holding the final drive to the swing arm and remove the entire thing as a unit...Wheel/finaldrive/driveshaft....Then lay the wheel on its side and pull the final drive off....Pull the shaft out of the pinion cup and do the service....It all has to come out anyway to service it this is just another way to get it done....Chris is correct though...The slot you see on the bottom is there for a reason...  cooldude

Thank you all for the replies! I was really worried since I had taken back wheels off many times and had never seen this. It's nice to know it's no big deal. FYI I had to remove the final drive unit to get it off. Once everything was off, the flange slid off no problem. No rust or anything since I change the tire every year and lube it up real good when I do. Thanks again everyone.

So I got the wheel back on, axle tightened, new rear brakes, but the wheel won't turn. It's clunking like it's in gear, but it's definitely in neutral. Even started it up, no problem. Could it have something to do with the removal of the final drive? Maybe didn't get it back in right? Or do I just need to put it in gear to get everything to set? It's still on the lift (shocks off), so I can't roll it around.

DON'T try to put the bike in gear in this condition...you'll definitely break something.

Put everything back together and you'll be OK.  The angle on the swingarm w/o the shocks is binding everything up.

Did you tighten the final drive nuts that hold it on to the swing arm before or after you torqued the axle?

Its not supposed to turn with the swing arm down.......and if you didnt support it from being all the way down it was stressing the u-joint.......the last thing you want to do while the u-joint is holding all the weight is put it in gear and try to make it turn when its locked up like that.....

Bingo with the shocks! Hooked 'em up and it spun just fine. Thanks again.
