My parents have a house in the Catskills in NY.  During the month of May and early June you have to stay in the house or in the screened-in gazebo because of the May Flies (I think that's what they're called). These thing bite and it is very painful when they do.  My parents have been coming up from Florida later into June each year because of them.  My grandparents lived up there and I can't recall these flies biting when we were visiting all year round all those years.

We have black flies(smaller than house flies) in the summer here in South Arkansas.  They bite.  They bite alot.
Worst time is evening near the lakes.

Out here in AZ we have Scottsdale trophy wife flies. They bite fat wallets. Hurts a lot when they fly off for another wallet.
