There is a fella that comes to the diner almost every morning on his bike[harley].. Yesterday he pulled in front of me[not closely] and as I followed him he started texting.. Today I ended up behind him again and he was talking on the phone.. In a car is bad enough,,but,, on a bike !!  I started to say something to him and joke about it a bit just to add some humor and he saw nothing wrong and pretty much let me know it was none of my business[ I'm being polite about what he said]..

I'll take a phone pic while I'm ridin' sometimes. I've done it with a camera too but the phone seems safer.

LOL I might die but I won't take anybody with me. I only take pics while riding if I'm the only one on the highway or the last bike and way back. Lot's of places here where I've got the highway to myself.

You would have to be a total and utter idiot to use a phone on the bike, let alone text.  You need two hands to ride and more concentration than driving a car.  It will be just a matter of time until the guy is dead or kills someone else. uglystupid2 uglystupid2

I don't text, don't have a cell phone setup to text, and never will.  What a waste of money.

If I have something important to say, I'll pick up a phone and call.  Call me stupid, idiot, or old school, I could care less.

I understand texting has it's moments and uses, but never for me.

I recently added a cupholder on my cycle and routinely drink with left hand going 62 mph with right hand on throttle, but usually not if any traffic is around me.  You could say that is careless and stupid just like texting I guess though?   To each their own.

Point being, whether it be texting, talking on phone, eating, drinking, or just plain old day dreaming, accidents do happen but by far texting and talking on the phone while driving seems to be the worst culprit causing accidents on the road today.   That I do not do.

I have blue-tooth in my full face helmet that interfaces with my phone.  I talk on the phone sometimes when riding... and have iPOD tunes other times.  Or an connected thru blue-tooth to my riding partner Squealy.  We look out for each other, and frankly, I feel a lot safer when we can talk on the bikes.  Not to mention it's a lot of fun to chat with a brother WHILE riding.

Scala's rock!  Even though they still piss me off once in a while...

I was raised when you used a pay phone if you needed to talk away from your home landline.  I couldn't imagine why needing to talk while driving is so important to risk an accident because your mind is somewhere else.  However, I did my share of babbling on six and two meter amateur radio while driving so I can't say much.

I have my cell turned off while driving and it's in the saddlebag when riding.  I take pictures while riding but I use a small camera hanging from a strap around my neck.  If I need to grab both handlebars I just drop the camera.

Many of us have bike to bike or rider to passenger intercoms, or CB's which we use while riding. As has been mentioned, bike to bike intercoms can make a ride safer and stops easier to orchestrate. Although I haven't used a CB while riding (or driving) I'm sure the same can be said for them too.

My Zumo will bluetooth to a phone and a headset for hands free talking. And, even without any of electronics most of us will pull our heads back a little to talk to our passengers.

As with anything else, common sense and ability is the usual difference between one person doing something safely that is a danger for someone else to do. Just as talking to your passenger on the open highway is different than doing so in fast rush hour traffic or during a panic stop.

I work in DC and I commute from Maryland everyday.

I can say without a shadow of a doubt that people that drive and text are distracted.

Never seen a biker texting.

A person that is texting, drives with the appearance that they are asleep or drunk or both.

I stay in the fast lane, for 3 reasons.

1. I like to get home as soon as possible  police
2. The people in that lane are typically paying attention. The idiots that text typically think that they will move over and slow down a little to reduce the chance of an accident.
3. I only need to pay attention to 3 side (front back, and right side).

i agree with you 100%.  i'd reather get a phone call over a text.  texting is "listen to what i have to say, i don't care to listen to you" type of comunication.  there's no emotion, they're just words.  i just recently started texting, about 6 months ago.  only reason was because the kids nagged the heck out of me to get it.  i did hold out for several years......  for me texting is pretty good now that i've got a decent phone to text with.  gives me the ability to just tell people what i think, and not care for thier responce.....

as for riding on a cycle and texting, there's no mesage worth reading that could endanger the beauty of my cycle.  Wink

The reason why some of you guys don't like texting is the reason why it's so appealing to some people. In business texts are usually succinct and to the point. I don't have time to wait on hold for someone or exchange pleasantries or listen to them prattle on about bs. Text me and I can answer you at the next available opportunity. In the meantime we can both accomplish something else while waiting. Personally unless it's too much to type I'd take texting over calling 10 times out of 10.

I get a lot of chances to talk on the phone. Everytime I get a chance to ride, I just ride.  Just ride, and go home.

I agree 100%. When I send or receive work related texts there is no room for misunderstandings. It's there in black and white. When dealing with technical issues that is always key.

I have done that myself. usually to just to say i know you are calling, i want to talk, but on the bike, let me call you back in a bit.

Like if my wife calls knowing im on the bike, it is important, and i need to answer it.

I pull it out, stuff it in the helmet, and it stays just fine.   I have had times when i just left it there after the call till there was a good place that i could get it back out safely.

If i know i have a call coming important i will take my blue tooth.

I can talk way lots better than i can text.  2funny My thumb covers like 4 buttons.  uglystupid2 Easier for me to call.  Wink But as to the point of the thread-my phone goes in the trunk while i'm riding.  Cool My daughters and my ex wife have mentioned hands free stuff to use while i'm riding.  crazy2 Told them NOT to buy it for me cause it WILL NOT be used by me.  cooldude When i'm riding i'm riding.  Cool I remember when we didn't have cell phones and a lot of the other electronic tethers we have today,  Angry But at the same time-at least to me-the cell phone is a tool and a handy item to have-but it AIN'T no religion.  uglystupid2 My daughter was texting in church one Sunday-trust me when i tell you it NEVER happened again.  cooldude I may or may not check my cell when i stop because i'd much rather RIDE.  cooldude RIDE SAFE.

Yesterday we rode back to Pittsburgh from Myrtle Beach.  The ride was about 600 miles, and we were no more than 3 miles from home when we passed a bar on our right, and pulling out of the bar was someone texting on their cell phone and not paying attention.  They pulled out right in front of us, I honked and swerved because I saw them coming - AND THEY HONKED BACK AT ME!  Like I was in the wrong!  After 14 hours of riding (there was a bad accident on 77 north that closed down the interstate for a couple of hours, and the state pooper didn't let us use the shoulder to get off the highway - they really outta come up with better ways to handle a closed interstate like that, like someone telling traffic to exit before it's too late), I was in NO mood for that $hit, but I was too tired to do anything about it.  Undecided
