We're flying out west and renting bikes. We're not quite sure how to pack our helmets. The gear, boots, etc. we know we can pack in the suitcase and check. The helmets we're not quite sure of how to pack. Will they be safe going in the checked luggage even though we have soft side suitcases? We hate to have anything break. We figure we'll pull our plastic faceshields and carry them on the plane with us.
Just wondering if anyone has checked the helmets with no problems. Hate to get there and find a broken helmet as my husband's is hard to replace.

A broken helmet???? I use a helmet bag and put the shield inside the helmet...should be good...P>S> I carry mine on, to much $$$

if your worried about your helmets getting broken in luggage , maybe you need to buy a WAY better helmet.

Thats one thing that should never leave your hands, carry them on the plane ! if they don't fit in the overhead they will fit under the seat in front of you by your feet. most helmets come in a cloth carry bag with a draw cord to sling over your shoulder. T.P.

Bought my first Valk 1700 miles from home. Wife & I carried our helmets in a carry on bag. Fit fine. Not willing to take the chance of getting there without a helmet to ride home.Al

My Bell came with a very nice looking and functional bag that is well padded. Carry on sounds like yer best bet.  RIDE SAFE. |

I agree with shipping them and pick them up when you arrive. FedEx has worked for me and it takes the pain out of hauling them around/packing in suitcases. Good luck!

Ship what you can and make sure you have it there a coupla days early IN CASE anything gets lost.
Then ship it back. So much easier than carrying it for a flight.

+1 I ship all my stuff to Erwin every year...ride up w/ a jacket, clear shield and meds. Some of the people who pull into the H.I. look like they tied and moving van to the back of their bike!!!

Helmets are designed to self destruct in order to disperse energy and protect the head. If it takes a good impact, the shell will crack, making it effectively useless for another impact. The gorillas at baggage handling can put some good impacts on things. It doesn't matter how much you spend on your helmet, they're all designed this way. One could argue that the better a helmet, the better the energy dispersal, and thus the more thorough the self-destruction. That being said, I have transported helmets twice. Once I carried it on, and the other time, it was packed in my checked luggage, but packed in the middle of a pile of clothes. Mark |

Thank you every one for your responses! We're going to carry John's on (his is special order and many $$$) and I will check mine buried in the suitcase!
We had originally planned to ship them out to Seattle, but, didn't want to go without riding that long here at home, both before and after our trip.
Sandy, we are going to fly to Seattle and spend five days (7/28 to 8/2) traveling the Washington, Oregon coast and then I believe Crater Lake and a few other spots. We'll be riding with Romeo and his wife, Juliet. Romeo has family living in the Seattle area so he's somewhat familiar with the area and been working on routes with a few of the WA guys from the VRCC.
If anyone has any must do's/must see's suggestions for that area, whether it's seeing, eating or experiencing, please, let us know! John and I will be in Seattle a few days before to tour that area and will head up to British Columbia for the 3rd, 4th and 5th of August.
We welcome any suggestions and if anyone's in the area---let us know we'll follow you on some of your favorite roads!

That's a phenomenal idea. Whenever someone reacts to me carrying my helmet in to work by asking "you ride a motorcycle?", I respond with "no, I'm just very concerned with car safety." It's been a while since anyone asked me that, so I haven't had a chance to tell them that I've had a HANS device installed in my Volvo. Mark |

When I do that, I carry it on in a duffle with my leather, I usually wear my boots, so I am good to go when I get there...full face and 3/4 both fit in over head bins...
People will not steal your clothes, but a helmet and leathers??? GONE!!! Be safe and carry on...

I checked shipping cost for both helmets, plus riding gear, in a box large enough to handle it all and it was much more than checking the clothing and carrying on the helmets. So we will probably be packing the gear and carrying on the helmets. And paying to check the extra luggage.

I talked with Delta and we can do a carry on suitcase and one personal item. She said that a helmet would be the personal item. I can't carry a purse, but, can put it in the helmet or carry on. So, we're all set to go!

I used an Army ruck sack to hold boots, riding jacket/pants and helmet. Don't pack it full and it can be carried on.
