.....a 1973 Dodge Dart Swinger......318 V8......cost me $550.....had borrowed $500 from 1st Franklin Financial......Daddy paid the other $50....which I had to pay back......He and my oldest Sister went and picked it out for me......but she came and picked me up from school early and let me drive it home.....i never rode a school bus again after that day....... I was responsible for my own insurance, gas, maintenance......I added the air shocks to the back....and eventually had a new cloth top put on it......it would bury the speedometer past the 120mph mark and just lay there.....went to many a fire at the VVFD in it.....it floated at those speeds and this was back when recaps were "ok" for cars....... ...... Had a LOT of good times in it.....spent a lot of $$ on repairs there towards the end, but I think it had 220,000 miles on it when I sold it to my Brother...... My Daddy was really ticked off when I spent the same amount of $$ on a Trek mtn. bike a couple of years later when I attended UGA.......

Here is the best one of the first cars that I've had. 49 Olds Rocket 88. 54 years gone and I still miss this one. That is a sweet looking ride Wayne.....it looks like it had a high gloss finish??.....Did the engines back then have enough "ooomph" to push those heavy cars around?

The 49 Olds 88 was the first car to have an ohv 303 ci high compression V8 and was the hottest production car around with its 4 speed hydramatic tranny. It was the number one in production road races then. It would lay rubber throughout 1st gear and partially in second. Not much today but back then I could beat ANY production car in acceleration until the 56 Chevy came out. Maximum torque was at a low 1600 rpm. Yeah, you could say that the paint was high gloss. I was working part time in a body shop and we prepped with two coats of primer followed by 6 coats of lacquer on it, hand polished by me, between each coat. A lot of work.

Ok......those cars just looked as heavy as tanks......glad it had some get up and go in it!!...... I kind of wondered if new cars off the line back then had such a shiny/deep gloss to them......I bet it was a lot of work but looks great even in this old photo

My son, Chris (Psychotic Bovine) had a Datsun 260z. I drove it. That was a great sports car to drive but it was rusted all over badly. He got rid of it after having the body shop patch it for the third and last time. Except for power, the Miata was a much better sports car. IMHO,
About the upside down Miata. It takes real stupidity to flip one, driving 'way beyond the car's capability. I drove my Miata behind 98T and my son Mark riding their Valks at Maggies Valley and I could easily stay with them except in the straightaways and this was before I modified with Koni shocks and bigger stabilizer bars.

My first car was a 59 Pontiac. Didn't have it long enough to take a pic. The morning after I bought it from my uncle for $50, I took it out on the Interstate to see how fast it would go. I blew the engine up. My mom made my uncle give me my money back and take the car back.

!965 98 Oldsmobile. Red with a white top. I put a great stereo in her. Pioneer KP500 supertuner, FM cassette player. I went everywhere with that car, off road, hiway, dirt roads. With it being a land yacht, she came with her own fog horn . Bought it in '78 at my first duty station outside of Clovis, NM. I think she got about 5 gallons to a mile. But that was when gas was cheap. Walt

My first car was a 1964 Rambler: It had a flathead 6 cylinder that almost used more oil than gas. I paid $50 bucks for it, while spending the summer in Fl with my brother. I bought it from a Puerto Rican that had painted it RED, WHITE and BLUE. Its best feature was the folding full bench seat. My second car was a 1972 Gran Torino Squire Station wagon: It took me everywhere that I wanted to go, but usually broke down on the way home. Its best feature was the fold down rear seat. My favorite vehicle ever was my 1975 GMC Sprint: I still have it, but it is need of a lot of restoration. Maybe someday................
