Do Your Best and Miss the Rest!

Yorkville, Illinois

« on: July 22, 2012, 08:51:00 AM »

Wife and I headed out for IZ from Yorkville, Illinois (50 miles west of Chicago) bright and early Saturday morning.
Things I learned or relearned...
If a deer comes out of nowhere and is running parallel to our bike and in the same direction, it's best to brake rapidly as they won't signal when they will suddenly turn in front of us.

I found that a Valkyrie key WILL occasionally vanish into thin air at a gas stop in the middle o Tim-Buck-Two. Glad I carried a spare.

I learned if I'm going to be travelling over 12 hours in hot, scorching sun with a big ole hole in my jeans at about thigh level, it's best to apply sunscreen to that area or I'll get a really weird red spot that hurts many hours later.

I relearned that if you put sunscreen on your forehead, you might as well stab both eyes with icepicks cuz that's what it will feel like when sweat causes it to run down into the eyes. Looking into bright sun at sunset makes the eyes tear as well.

And finally, I've learner that the wife can only yell ˝Watch Out", "Slow Down", and ˝E-Gads" about 6452 times before my Chatterbox headset battery runs out!

But we made it!

When we'd go on long trips, my wife used to ask why the battery on her chatterbox always died before mine did.  I started to explain how much power it takes transmit versus to receive, then saw this going really bad and just said, I don't know.

A strip of electrical tape across the top and bottom of face shield helps block low / high sun.

A Highbinder tip.

That was great. Brought back good memories of some of the "things" my wife and I had the pleasure of learning over the years-thanks.

Things I learned...

There is no difference between the best, most expensive rain suits and the cheapest rain gear when they are left in the hotel room and this is when the rain amounts of Biblical proportions generally occur and the amounts of rain increase and temperature decrease by distance squared from any reasonable shelter.

With a half helmet, I always must sunscreen below my eyes to my collar bone, ears and back of neck, but never on my forehead/bald head....... it runs, and it goops up your helmet liner, slimy nasty.  I carry a boony hat for when the helmet is off.

Desert is best for sun.

Got post-op skin cancer scars on neck and forearm from not wearing sunblock.

+1 what Britman said  I use at top and bottom of shield  At bottom 2 or 3 lines of the tape and make sure it goes across the bottom edge so you dont get prism reflections

an old Bronx method but I dont mind if Highbinder thinks he thought of it  angel

Good one RP.  cooldude

Reminds me of when we got some of those and just North of Two Wheels Only, Iris was saying all those OOhs and AH's when we rounded the curves from the back seat.  I asked her if she didn't have something REAL important to say, to just wait until we stopped. Smiley

Usually 2 strips on the bottom will work fine, then adjust the sheild up or down according to the angle of the sun and it works like a hat brim, blocking the sun.. cooldude  Hey Oss, I don't remember any old timers from the Bronx being around when I came up with this idea... Smiley...just a early morning sun blinding me coming out of South Dakota..

I can see the explanations at Sturgis:
"No, for the fiftieth time, I did NOT convert to Judaism!  The yarmulke is because I cut the top off my ball cap and burned my head in a....AAAARGH....LEAVE ME ALONE!"

Or it could be explained as tan lines from the thong  cooldude

I had a full face helmet, sunglasses and drove mostly with the sun in front of me.  Even with the dark shield, I got the racoon tan line and sunburned cheeks.  That is what all the chrome up front will do for you.
