Left the hotel this morning on the final leg of our trip to ES. I got about 20 moles down the interstate and started hearing a clicking sound  it was getting louder so pulled over to check it out. ALL the lug nuts on the trailer tire on the left were gone, ALL OF THEM!! The wheel is shot. I took two nuts off the other wheel and hobbled back the wrong way on the shoulder. I got some more lug nuts at auto parts store. Got one good lug hole and one half bad one that's gone and one stud that is gone. Hobbled the rest of the way to ES. Made it here, but I have to come up with a wheel for the trip home.

Now, the question is... How the hell did all four lug nut vanish after a thousand miles of riding?
Good thing the wheel is in a bit of a wheel well that was the only thing keeping the wheel from falling off.

A lugwrench in someone else's hands.

Had it happen before on a hubcap (bolt-on style) on my dad's Blazer back in the 80's, but they went ahead and took the hubcap.

Glad you caught it before it caused a serious problem - you may be able to find a wheel and tire at walmart, if not there, there's a Tractor Supply and Arkansas Trailer in Springdale.

Someone wanted that wheel more than you. Something scared them off before they could finish? That sucks, but glad your o.k.

I'd guess it was more like someone just F'n with you and trying to cause problems.  A good reminder to perform a good pretrip inspection before hitting the road after stopping and leaving bike unattended for even a minute.  Some people get pleasure from causing other people problems.

Wal Mart has 8" and 12" tires mounted on wheels. About $45-$50. BTW: How are those Lister wheels coming along.

I'm as suspicious as everyone else, no way 4 lug nuts would all come loose on their own. There are people who love to cause trouble for others; if you've seen the news that hasn't been covered by the mainstream media about the flash mobs who descend on unsuspecting people and beat the crap out of them, you know what I mean. Travel safely and fix when you can.

Trailer wheels of all types are notorious for loosening up down the road.

Some trailers even post somewhere on the trailer intervals for tightening them.

Jeff, your closest possible place of getting a wheel will be in a Wal-Mart.   There is a Wal-Mart in Berryville, AR.    It is 12 miles to the store, via Hwy 62.

I'd also suggest you replace all of those 4 lug bolts.      If you don't they will currently be weakened.    Just trust me on that one.     What size is your wheel, 8", 12" or what.

This is a 24 hour store, phone # is (870) 423-4636

Been there done that on a trailer wheel.   Also dropped all the lugs on the Chevy Trike in Colorado doing about 85 MPH.    I had just passed a semi, and when the wheel took off, the semi blocked the highway till I got stopped, the he took the right hand lane and blocked traffic from crawling up my butt.   Was on the Interstate running from I-80 in Nebraska to Denver.    Trailer wheel separated on the way to InZane.   What a mess that was.

When you get your new wheel tightened up drive a day and re-torque the wheel. Then take a permanent marker and draw a line across the nut onto your rim. Makes a great tell for loose lug nuts, many semi trucks use this method.

BLue Lock Tite might get you back, of course with new nuts.

Minus the one.

But studs are cheap and most of hte itme easy to replace.

Sucks having troubel on the road.

Sorry you are having trouble.

The problem is... I have chrome wheels.
If I get one from TCS, and they were out of them, they are white. So I'm trying to find a place that can ship a chrome 12 inch 4 lug wheel to ES this week. Save me the $80 on a white wheel I'll have to replace when I get home

Glad you are o.k. and safe, that is the most important thing and you and others sharing the road are safe.

I too about 17 years ago or so had a similar thing pulling a camper pushing the limits with a small 2.8L chevy s-10 V6 on the interstate night before deer hunting in rush hour traffic.  The left wheel rim and all totally came off going 60 mph bumper to bumper interstate traffic heading north.  Luckily, the wheel hopped and bumped and shook all over terribly and stayed inside the wheel well somehow and not into traffic all over us.  Pulled over and tire was still good but changed to the spare with 2 lug nuts on each rim and limped to nearest auto parts store for more lug nuts.

My guess is some idiot tampered with our lug nuts before leaving that late afternoon.  A good reminder to always check the tightness of lug nuts which, me included, hardly ever do.

I have a ritual that I check when we leave. Lugs weren't on that list. they are now. I've heard of people pulling pins on receiver hitches, so I don't both with pins, I use a double nutted bolt. Now I have to check lugs too.

speaking of lug nuts. Sherry got home from trailering four horses to the Ferrier for horse shoes. It's a BIG....36 foot 4 horse hauler with live in quarters. She pulls up in the driveway...and we notice....eh...one of the four trailer tires...is GONE! Apparently sheered off the lugnuts? Wheel GONE! She drove back in another vehicle looking to see if she could find the tire anywhere. Nope.

this is a HEAVY duty rig. To see ALL those lugnuts sheered off (it's either 8 or 10 of the dang things...big ones at that)...is pretty bizzare. She said she never even felt it...doesn't know when/how it happened. Just knows when she got home, the tire was gone. Now we have to go get someone to replace all those lugs/bolts........

Wow Sherry....some have accused me of having a screw loose before, but nothing like that!  Glad there was no BAD CHIT other than losing a wheel......

I'd have to guess that if Jeff hadn't caught his in time, and the wheel didn't fall off first, it would have sheared the lugnuts off of his as well.  I'm betting that it being a double axle kept her from feeling the issue, but also kept her from having a serious problem.

Scary either way.  I concur on the "double check everything" mantra, even if I don't follow it like I should.  It's easy to say "double check" from behind a computer, but it takes a major (near) event like this to motivate someone to actually do it.

Searched the Internet high and low couldn't find a matching wheel. I called Hannigan, they said they were obsolete and they couldn't get them anymore, but they had 3 left on the shelf. They are sending one to the hotel for me. Not too bad with the price either. TSC wanted $90 for a painted white wheel and tire. Hannigan sold me a tire and chrome wheel to match for $129.
And I don't have to drive around trying to find one.

Five lugs equals twenty moles,...or one lug per four moles.

It's all new math, yanno.

Yeah.  I guess 6.022x10^23 would be too many lugs per mole.   2funny

No, you have it all wrong. Moles is a system of measurement of distance. It is the distance that you can travel while loosing lug nuts. 5 moles to a lug nut. 20 moles = 4 lug nuts.  Grin

I pull a 14 cf Cycle Mate on occasion.  I keep a ratchet, extension and the proper size socket in the trailer.  Before pulling, I check the nuts for tightness.   If there should ever be a problem, at least I have the proper tool.  Ya never know.  coolsmiley

I "checked them" before we left the house with a 1/2" impact. Went around the hub twice.
