Here is an interesting article that might be of interest to some of you in case you come over to Canada and forget that you have a gun on you.  Not sure how you can do that, but you guys have a little bit of a different perspective on guns than I do.

We discussed this awhile back on this board.  The difference is that we have a Second Amendment.  Yes, violence makes the news these days.  Even we don't know what drives guys like in the Colorado shooting.  Of course, that's what you read about.  You can walk in my town and not be too concerned about violence.  Next door, Ft. Wayne. is a little different.

Having said all that, most of us gun enthusiasts are aware of and know better than to try to bring guns into Canada.  Although we disagree with the law, it is YOUR law and we must respect it.  Yes, it would be nice to have BIG signs before crossing over but maybe they should be placed so the forgetful can stop and turn around before entering Canada.

I didn't put this in to knock you guys in any way.  I put it in here in case you really do bring a gun into Canada unknowingly and this will give you an explanation acceptable to Canadian border guards.  I remember hearing about a guy from Texas who came up to Canada and forgot he had a gun in his truck.  Canadian border guards didn't find it, it was only found when he went back to the States and they checked his truck.  The guy truly forgot he had the gun in his truck.  I tried to find the story but I was not able.

On my Canada trip a couple years ago, I stopped at a pawn shop in Montana and pawned the .357.  Then picked it up a week later.  Cost me like a buck or so for them to store it officially and securely.  Plus I had the pawn ticket - I could have used it at the border if needed, to show I respect their laws, and pawned my gun so that might be sufficient to stop any further searches.  Or not if he thinks that's BS.  Or he could have searched and found my Buck folder and my pepper spray.  Didn't know that's illegal too.

In that article - it says there are "no gun" signs posted at the border.  I crossed at Roosville on Hwy 93, Montana.  I read all the signs, didn't see that one.  Though the guard asked about weapons.  If I had one, I'm thinking that might have been too late.  As opposed to a sign beforehand, turning around and disposing of it before arriving at the border guard.

Solution - do not visit and spend your money in any country that does not respect your god given right to self defense.

My brother here in Houston is a real estate broker.    He has the CHL and carries his weapon in his briefcase at all times.   Always has.   Couple years ago he and his wife were in business suits and getting on a flight.   He forgot he had it with him.  Got busted at the xray machine.  Security took him and his wife into an interogation room at the airport and quized them for several hrs.   He has no criminal record at all.  He is around 60 yrs old at the time.   Long story short, they let him mail the weapon home and resume his flight.  They also told him he would be recieving a fine in the mail.    Later he got a letter from the powers to be that his fine was $3,000 if he contested the case, and $1,500 fine if he just payed it.       No winning this case so he paid the $1,500 fine.

It's not your 'God given right', it's you Second Amendment right.  Big difference, especially to those that are religious.  If it was a 'God given right' we would have it to.  Evil

My wife's Grandpa got caught at the border crossing with a handgun in his RV several years ago. He always had a handgun in the RV and just never thought to take it out. I think his NRA sticker is what got the RV searched though. They kept his gun and let him go on.

You DO have it too,,,, Canadians have just allowed their government to deny the exercise of it, without protest apparently  uglystupid2  And since most Americans believe the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were inspired of God, then that right was given by God,, angel
And I have had my weapon with me, and forgotten it, since it's ever present.  I just forgot to remove it before I exited the car.  My bad,,,,   Oh, and I've also forgotten to turn off my headlights before exiting the car  crazy2

and BTW,,, thanks for the link,,good read

Question. What do we do when say we want to go to Alaska? Esp hunting? Buy guns in Alaska and then sell them to come home?  ???

Oh I did forget I had my gun on me tonight at the 4-H fair. I stuck it in my pocket and clipped it to it. I was at home doing something before heading to town. Got inside the fair grounds and happened to put my hands in my pocket. Opps! I just pushed it into my pocket.  crazy2

I always liked the Steven Wright quote.  He's approaching the Canadian border and the border dude says   got any firearms?  He looks both ways and replies    what do you need?

If you get attacked by a Moose without your gun what do you do?

All you have to do is wrap it up and UPS it back home.

Duh.

Awhile back the wife and I crossed into Canada at the Soo.  I was asked three time whether I had a firearm. I was really puzzled since I supposedly don't look like a scuzz with my white hair (at least I've been told that  Cheesy).

They had me pull over and we were subjected to a complete search, luggage, truck inside and out, etc.  No gun was found because I didn't have one.  Not a good experience.  I couldn't figure it out.

Then it hit me!  In the back of my extended cab of my compact truck was my cap with ILA on it (Institute For Legislative Action), an NRA division.

If you have a NRA bumper sticker, it's almost a guarantee that you WILL be searched.  I don't have an NRA sticker on my car as it's also almost a guarantee that your truck and home could be searched by  "unauthorized" individuals. Wink

I don't think they mind hunting rifles during hunting season, but you still have to declare them.  If it is an assault rifle, hand gun or any 'restricted weapon', then that is a different thing.
Canada gun laws are too restrictive.  I used to have a number of rifles and shot guns.  In the early 90's the Liberal gov't at the time went crazy with gun laws because that was what the people wanted at that time.  Unfortunately, it has not reverted back.  I don't bother owning any these days because there are not many places that you are able to shoot them without problems from the cops.  tickedoff
