I purchased a 03 Valkyrie about a month ago and have had a black cloud over my head every sence.
the first ride I blew a fork seal, second ride I lost the final drive, third ride I blew two intake tube o-rings, fourth ride cracked a vacume on one of the carbs, now I have a continous clicking or poping noise when I depress the rear break petal moving slow. Ive always wanted one of these bikes and sold a great VTX to get it. Im still hoping me and the Valk. can be good buds but the wind seems to be blowing the other way. The break caliper will move up and down about 1/8" is this normal ?

You should return the bike to the seller! Amazing, considering that I met a guy this weekend at a BBQ cookoff who had 89K on his Valk and had never done anything except change the oil every 3K.

Where do you hear the noise? At the caliper or somewhere else?

Sounds like lack of maintenance. The bike is probably ok but is starving for maintenance.Either do it or return it.I would probably fix it up and I mean checking everything.an then you should have a good valk that will last a long time. After all its only a motorcycle not a very complicated machine. If you can do it yourself you can save a lot of money and learn to love it.Art

Im a repair guy by trade so dont get me wrong boys its just a little disheartning to have sutch a cool ride being undependable right off the bat. The reason I chose this paticular Valk. was because I new the old owner personaly and he does try to take good care of his toys and he assures me his local Honda shop did all his maint. Still I havent seen any grease where it should be and no o-rings on the rear wheel thus the final drive failure. Anyways back to this clicking on the rear breaks, you can also feel the clicks but only when you apply the rear break. Is it possible that one of the piston is sticking and the other piston is forcing the pad into the rotor cooling holes on one end ?

There is only one caliper for the rear brake.  If the pistons are misaligned you should be able to see that by looking at the caliper, brake disk and checking the pads.

When you had the wheel off did you check the bearings?  When the rear end was put back together, was it done right or just done? I made a slide show (its in shop talk) that shows the right steps.....its call chrisj's rear end service

From my personal experience the brakes are seldom the problem....sometimes the springs holding the pads in are loose and that can cause some noise...I have seen pistons stuck so uneven pressure cause some problems....generally those are obvious (if you look close) and easy to fix.

The noise you describe sound more like a wheel bearing rather than the brake

Would a wheel bearing only make noise when breaks are applied too.

Ditto what Jeff said.  Sound's to me like your left rear wheel bearing is starting to go.  Applying the rear brakes amplifies the sound.  I thought that something was wrong with the brake caliper too when I first heard the noise.  This is what mine sounded like when my left rear wheel bearing went out (please excuse the crappy video....I was trying to hold my cell phone, capture the noise and still control the bike all at the same time)......

depending on whats wrong with a bearing it makes noise when its torqued a certain way.  Sometimes they just make noise all the time, sometimes only while in a turn.......mine only made noise right before stopping once (that was wierd)  Im sure deceleration forces can generate a noise if the bearing and or seat is worn just right

This is the next video I made right after I got home from that ride.  Lifted the bike for an inspection and this is what I heard.....
