Sweet. There's plenty of people out there who can kill a deer at that distance with a handgun but that's still unusually good shootin'.

I say, the good ol boy did what he had to do, Doesn't feel to good about it but possibly saved a policeman's life.  Man, I wish I could shoot a handgun that well, and hope I would do the same thing.  Hoser   Undecided

Proud the guy helped the officer...but I want to call B.S. on 5 out of 5 hits with a handgun at 495'...had to be a shorter distance

Most people are pretty bad at judging distance, though even if it was 100 or 125 that is doable but still pretty fine shootin.

Thinking about it though, when I used to shoot a LOT of handgun, I could pretty reliably hit a 2 liter soda bottle at 100 with a 6 in 357 revolver. Factor in a little luck and set front sight near the top of the target.........

Might have to test out the 45 at the 200 yard range.. WEEEEEEEEEEEEEE an excuse...

At 120 yards a 22 rifle will bust a poplar plank all the way through.

I have personally laid 9mm rounds into a silouhette target. Repeatedly off a bench. At 120 yards.

We practice with 44 magnum pistols at 120 yards off of a scope and rest.

45 more yards ain't that much more.

That ole man might have been a Marine and knew what he was doing.

It is not impossible.

Had to watch this video again. Guess I just like it.  Grin

I also got out some trajectory and reloading references to satisfy my curiosity.

A 240 grain (typical 44 mag bullet weight) Hornady XTP bullet could be expected to leave the muzzle of a revolver with a 6" or 7" barrel at 1350 FPS without pushing it too hard. If that same revolver was sighted in for 50 yards you could expect around 16.5" of bullet drop at 150 yards. If he was shooting for center mass at 165 yards that could well have wound up as a thigh shot which is where his first bullet hit. If he was aiming higher but with a shorter barrel or heavier bullet the same could happen. Most 357 loads would have roughly the same drop.

To have continued to hit him at that distance once he was on the ground would have been way tougher I think. At least, getting good hits on deer that are lying down has always been tougher for me.
