Joe,

If you determined the taxes were $144,000,000 by subtracting the $88.5 million lump sum from the posted prize of $232 million, I think you missed a step.  Unless I am mistaken, the announced prize is the sum of payments made over a period of years and the prize (before taxes) is reduced significantly if taken as a lump sum.

Well that is true Vanwagon.  The government only pays as long as the winner is alive.  So it is best to take the lump sum unless your very careful, have long life genes, and are very fortunate.  However if you take in consideration that you just blew your lump sum of luck just winning the lottery, you might be better off taking lump sum.
The thing that gets me about the lottery is this.  The REAL winner is the government.  They get the use of the money all the way up til someone wins.  And the winner only gets a small portion of the money collected.  Then when the person wins, he gets the hell taxed out of him.
So the government wins on the front end and on the tail end.  However So Carolina does it right.  The big win is 100,000 bucks tax free.  All the money goes to education also.
But if Washington can figure out a way to get some money......it will be done.  No matter who's in office.
I will buy a lottery ticket from time to time.  So far I am a big fat donut hole for wins.  Undecided  However my boss did win 500 bucks last week.  But she plays about daily.
Anyway a big congratulations to the winner.  cooldude  88 million is nothing to sneeze at either.  I certainly would take it.

And, it went to a young, cattle rancher in SD, who had just had his trailer house repossessed.  At least there is a little justice.
