cause the calipers to get stuck   My brakes were just a year or so old.

Less than 2 weeks before leaving for my trip to the west coast I got a front avon installed at Americade.
There was plenty of meat on the pads when the tire was changed as the techs tell you
if there is any appreciable wear and said I was fine

On the road from Keystone SD (just 2000 miles from home) as I stopped for a breakfast in a micro town on 16 I heard noise from the front

Taking the Valk to a Honda shop in Gillette Wy I was told the front pads on the right side were entirely gone  Riding metal on metal  The tech released them and told me not to use the front brake till I got pads

Thankfully Bear rode from Powell MT to Billings MT and back to get me 2 sets of front brakes as nobody else (Gillette, Buffalo, Cody) had them and I stupidly left my extra sets at home
I had a spare u joint and bearings but no extra brakes  tickedoff

We changed the brakes in the parking lot once I got over the Big Horn Mountains and into Powell
One of the pistons was a real Bitch to compress  We changes both sides  The left side was only half worn but we changed it anyways

Should I rebuild the caliper using the honda kit ?  I am pretty sure the rotor on the right
is warped now and I will order one when HDL has their sale in a few weeks along with 2 more brake sets for the front.   78775 miles on 01 interstate

OSS, rebuild kit is just seals. Calipers are probably the easiest part to rebuild. The only parts are the caliper, two pistons, and four seals.

Sounds like the folks that installed the Avon on the front didn't follow Honda reassembly instructions properly.  Angry There needs to be at least 0.7 mm clearance between the pad and rotor. If the rotor is now wrapped, a rebuild of the caliper would be easily accomplished when changing out the rotor. Peace of mind is always a good thing!  Smiley

Yes, rebuild/clean up the calipers... I'm doing mine now... you might have a hard time
getting that piston out that was hard to compress... I use compressed air, first with
both pads still in, then with just one...





If any pistons are boogered up, they're about $22 each from hdl... I've gotten several calipers
that were very rebuildable from pinwall for about $35...

Hey Oss,

When you say left side right side........are you meaning:

left=clutch...or left as you are looking at them from in front of the bike?

If you mean clutch side was good and throttle side was wore out, thats two instances of that side brakes having trouble.  Its been my experience that the trouble is usually on the clutch side when a installation error is made.

The Answer to your question is maybe. If they just mashed the calipers together without cleaning out the road grime, could have caused the bind, and not have the caliper releaseing like it should. cooldude

Oss, this is just my HAO, but if you buy one rotor, get the other one also.

I had a warped rotor way back a few years ago, just changed one rotor and the other one gave me sheet fits till I also replaced it,   

Just a thought.

Oh yeah, as side note, when I did change them both together, I got EBC rotors and pads.        I just looked it up and currently there is 49K on  my pads.   Still look good, haven't put the mic to them, but to the worthless eyeball of mine, they good for another 20K.

as sitting on bike my right hand Chrisj  (brake hand)

I had EBC pads once on honda rotor wont do it again  If I go that way again it will be all same EBC or Honda
