My understanding is that if you switch to reserve and forget to switch back to the main tank when you fill up, the reserve tank won't fill and you could run out of fuel.

There's no reserve tank, Joe, just a fuel pickup tube with an upper (fuel selector set to on) and lower (fuel selector set to reserve) hole.

Not uncommon with the OEM valve. If you accidentially dont have it seated in position so the little ball is clicked it, it looks like its in the "on" position but really its sucking all the gas as if its on reserve. This did happen to me as well, after that I was oh so careful to hear that ball click in and wiggle it a little to make sure its securely in the "on" position. Or you could get a real valve and not mess with that POS
