My Valk engine is noisier than my 1500 Wing engine. Now I know the Wing has got hydraulic tappets and the Valk manual. I have just checked the valk and No6 cylinder the exhaust valve had twice the gap it should. The only other one I had to adjust was No3 exhaust.

Carbs are synced and the Valk is now quieter than it was. Sounds a bit 'tappy' on tickover but fine once I twist the grip past 1000 revs.

Am I expecting too much for the Valk engine to sound as quiet as the Wing engine?? I think I'm being a bit too fussy.

What say you???

Yes. Also you might try a heavier weight oil.

I'm using a 10W/40 semi synthetic oil and BTW I have standard unmolested OEM pipes on so I can hear every noise the engine makes.....

some of us are using 15-50 diesel oil(no fuel conserving additives). seem to quiet down the tranny noise. i can hear the difference and i'm hard of hearing.
my choice is mobil 1 15-50, there are many others.  cooldude
i don't have a goldwing to compare it to though.

Yeah, your expecting too much. High performance engine, six carbs, mechanical lifters, different exhaust. And, not all the plastic covering the moving parts. The trans has square cut gears as opposed to healical cut, so the tranny makes more noise. Just not really the same engine/tranny as the Goldwing. A factory hot rod, made to make you smile cooldude

No tappets (lifters) in the motor. Rocker arms are also the cam followers. Best of all worlds.

20w-50 is my choice, dino/synthetic blend.

Yes.  Yes you can...

I concur with the oil recommendation.  I use 15/15 Mobile 1.  I tried 10/40 royal purple once... the ticking from the engine was definite, and I switched back after about 200 miles.
