Mine runs about a hundred degrees over ambient at posted speeds, If I crank her up on the super slab, I've seen 220° at 85 MPH YMMV

so you would consider 235-240 running hot. the ambient temp was around 107 and speeds around 80 - 85?

I run 210-220 when it's 107 degrees on the way home from work. Most of the trip is at 70 MPH.
You might want to check your thermometer against a known temperature. Do you have a cooking thermometer? Place them both in a pot of water and heat both on the stove.

To and from Inzane , over one hundred degrees outside , on my standard at 75 mph my oil temp was 210 - 220 . At 50 mph it would run 190- 200 . Pennzoil 10/40 motorcycle oil .

well my next question would be then, what might be causing this issue. the bike has fresh honda line 10-40 oil and new filter and done a flush on the radiator and replaced with new coolant. the fan motor is kicking on when the water temp is at 216 and back off at 209. can see circulation in the water so that makes me think the water pump is working. the water level drops just a bit for a few minutes and then comes back and over flows so that makes me think the thermostat is working. the fan seems to go on and off at the same temps so makes me think all that is working properly. my last thought is the oil pump. i dont have an oil pressure gauge but during all of this none of the idiot lights have came on. not sure why the oil temp is running so high. am i just being parinoid or might there be a problem.

The most likely cause is that your temp gauge is off. As Sandy noted, you really should check it before you do anything else. The candy thermometer type dip stick oil temp gauges can go out of calibration just through normal use. They are "calibrated" by turning the scale relative to the indicator needle. Your fan should come on between 199° and 207° and go off between 208° and 216°. Your oil temp should be 210-220 at steady state cruise. Your saying both are shifted up above normal, so to me that says its an indication problem.
Boil a pot of water, stick your oil temp gauge in it and if it doesn't say 212°, then adjusted it until it does, then put it back in the bike and go for a ride and see what you got. -RP

Have you added any Bling to the front of the bike?
If so, take it off and see where your guage goes.
To me it sounds fairly normal but some people are worry warts. No offense intended, you kind of sound like my wife. Every time she drives her Toyota Highlander she gets a new rattle, or a guage is running higher than normal, or a light is coming on too quick or not at all.
As of this writing, I have not found a damn thing wrong with her ride.

I think the temp-dipsticks are kind of a waste of money, I mean at what temp are you going to pull over and stop the bike? are we ever going to reach the operating temp that the big air cooled V twins run at ? and what is that temp ? I happen to run Amsoil in my Valkyries, flash point is 440 deg F T.P.

well rode the bike all weekend and things seemed normal i guess. no bling has been added to the bike lately so that shouldnt have been the problem. this isnt my bike and yes i do agree about the temp dipstick, seems like a waste of money to me, but hey just my opinion..lol..thanks for all the input all you gave but i think i will let him worry about it now...

I have one of the temp gauge dip sticks. I will agree they aren't really worth having. But kinda interesting to know the oil temp I guess. If I took it off, I would live. So...2000 I/S, 190 - 220 deg. Never higher or lower. Oil...Rotella T6.

My I/S runs about 210-220 on Mobil 1 15-50 ( it ran the same with 10-30). Although it hit 255 this year climbing Pikes Peak, two up with all the luggage!

I run in the 200 to 220 range with my std, or the IS without the sidecar. With the sidecar on, it runs around 240 to 245.
I use Amsoil, and it is rated for quite a bit more than 240, so I do not worry about it. If running pure Dino oil, that is getting close to top temp allowed.
