I would think 9 miles with petcock off is do-able, but never tried it more than 2-3 miles.  Try 15 -20 miles and see if you run out of gas before I'd mess with doing anything.

I usually get two or three miles with it off. I've had it not shut off at all but after turning it on and off it worked fine.

I rebuilt mine at around 50,000 miles when I was replacing hoses just to prevent trouble on the road. It never gave me any problems though. 95,000 miles now and no problems with the rebuild.

Nine miles cant be done at any speed with a good petcock in the off position.  What I have done a couple times is stop, turn off the valve by reflex and not  remember turning it off.  The other thing is even a  good OEM valve can look like its off but if the ball is hung up and not in the detent ITS NOT OFF ITS ON RESEVE AT THAT POINT.  Most likely....its just failing........Pingel time either way

Thats a fairly common problem.. If the tongue isn't held in quite the correct position when turning the fuel off,, the ball won't seat and it'll continue to flow fuel.. These monsters won't go more than a few miles if the petcock is working properly.. Sounds to me as though its time for a Pingle.. I've screwed around and wasted time and money on the OEM valves,, to me,, they are not worth the effort..

I rode over 100 miles with mine in the "nearly" off position during the summer.   The indicatior was almost to the "Off" position.   It wasn't till I tried to get ahead of a slow truck on a steep hill and started getting fuel starvation that I realized that I had issues.   Next day I went out and played with the selector.  Turning to "Off" while driving on deserted roads.  When I turned the selector to "Off", I could only go for about a mile before Valk would die.   I was on a rather steep hill, so could bumb start her. I did this  3 times with the same results.  I recently took the tank off to clean the air filter.  Put the selector in "0n" and "Res", no gas came out.  Valk has 75K on her with the OEM pitcock and I have put some 3K on her since.

TD:  I would go out and see if the "Off" really works or not before doing anything else.

Without the motor running it shouldn't if the petcock is working correctly.

Could be...I typically get 5-7 miles depending how I am driving then it sputters and dies till I turn it back on. I just started turning the valve off...not used to turning it back on yet! LOL

With no vacuum on the petcock ( IE; engine not running) no fuel should flow.
BUT, having been caught by a blocked vent orifice I can tell you it is posibble.
Additionally it is has been reported many times if the selector is not true to the petcock shaft
the petcock ball can be held of it's seat.
Anyone who has had a tank off and removed the petcock will know there is very little movement in the selector hanger to align the petcock shaft to the selector when refitting the petcock and tank to the bike.
You always need to check very carefully that it is aligned correctly.
Apply vacuum to the petcock while it is in the off postion and see if there is any fuel flow BEFORE hooking up the fuel line.
On my second Valk and the only problem petcock wise has been the the blocked orifice in the petcock.
In my circle of Valkyrie riding mates and acquaintances there has been no petcock failures and at least one of those rides has better than 200 K miles and age  on it. ( 1 of the first bought into Aus,original 96/97)

There is only about a mile of gas in the carbs.  If you're getting farther than that - you have a leaking petcock.  I know for sure - I have a dan-marc fuel shutoff and wired it with a latch relay and hidden pushbutton so it's an anti-hijack device.  Shut er down with either the key or the kill switch and the latch goes off. MANY times I've not hit the pushbutton after starting, and every time it's sputtering in under a mile.

I have pulled the bike out, started it letting it warm up a bit while putting on my helmet glasses and gloves, during this short time the motor began to stumble at idle. I forgot to turn the Pingle on. This is one upgrade that I am glad I did. IMHO.

Had the same thing happen to me but just running at idle, bike would not shut off and after the fan
came in like 3 times i shut it off and put it back in the garage, tried it again the next day and it
started to die but not completly dead. Put it away again. Went out in the am and could smell gas,
looked around and saw a puddle of gas and had gas under the left exhaust pipes. luckily did not
try to start it, pulled the plugs and turned it over. WOW! gas poured out of # 6 carb, gas went down the vac line into the manifold and into the exhaust. I bought a cover set at Inzane and put it on. the small thingy that stops the gas flow was stuck open. So all is good now.  Cheesy   Oh the petcock was
not set to off all the way.   uglystupid2
