While on my trip last week I noticed that both my Hi-beams on the IS were out. The lows are fine but I always ride with my hi's on during the day.

So the question is - is it just the bulbs or do I need to look into it more?

If your two high beams did, in fact, fail at the same time (I'm not doubting you, it just may be coincidence that one may have failed shortly after the other before you noticed the first failure), then I would suspect either the high beam relay, or the high/low switch on your handlebar, followed by wiring/connections serving these components and the bulbs.  I would inspect/clean/replace as required starting with the easiest and/or least expensive components and go from there.

In addition how old are they and mileage on them. I had just one that dropped out and my lows were still good. But i changed out both of them being as i already had all the crap out of the way and windshield off and fairing tilted out. When you change them out look at the 2 upper bolts that holt the fairing on. Loosen those and tilt the fairing out from the top. Makes the bulb change a bit easier. RIDE SAFE.

Just out of curiosity, why are you disassembling anything to change the i/s headlights.

Old fat arthritic hands not move so good anymore. And i was changing windshields AND the headlight bulbs at the same time. I believe it was Chriscmj that suggested rolling the fairing forward to make the headlight change easier. And it was. Had to remove speaker pods to change windshield. Rolling the fairing forward means ya don't gotta fight the forks on the bulb change. RIDE SAFE.
