Rear end started leaking oil where the wheel joins the rear end. Getting sidewall wet with oil.
I am at friends house, going to Honda in elmhurst at 10 am monday. Only one open mondays.

How much has to come apart to get to orings/seal?  Easy, or major disassembly?  Would it be better to try to get one from Pinwall or somewhere for now?

Was on way from ND to Ohio to visit Jetdriver. Losing time here. I do not remember hearing of this happening. Suggestions?

Thanks.

once you have the final drive off its a simple task...pluck the seal out and clean the bed and press a new one in .......BAM

Good!  Now, if they have the seal, will not take long.

If they don't have the seal at the Honda shop, maybe a local supply
house will have one that matches ?

I had that seal leak about a year ago.  My Tourer had about 140K miles at the time.  Here are a few thoughts:

You need to pull the wheel, but the seal could be replaced with the final drive in place.  The final drive is really easy to remove, though.  And, the seal can be installed with your thumbs.

The seal is pretty large (60 MM diameter?) and could be difficult to find outside of the Honda OEM catalog.

When mine leaked, the bike was quite driveable.  If I were out on the road, I'd clean the wheel, fill the final drive, and drive it for a while to see how bad it leaks.  If it were a small amount I might decide to continue the trip, and clean the tire/check the drive oil at gas stops.

The parts fiche shows that it is "OIL SEAL (65X85X7)".  This seal shows up on google search in several different bikes and atv's.

And of course the GL-1500.

Too bad they are all Honda's, so it has to be a Honda dealer.....

Good Luck!

Good thing you are not in Kansas... The local honda dealer here could sell you an off the shelf evo motor in stock for a harley ... and not an air filter for a honda unless it was installed already on one of the hondas on the floor.

Let me know what you come up with Mel. I have a complete pumpkin in the garage if needed, but I'm about two hours away from you. Good luck!  Darrell.

Before doing anything check something first. I had a crush washer leaking on my drain plug and it will look like it is leaking out of the rear end. The wind will pull a trick on you. I was worried about mine and finally figured out the crush washer was the problem.

I made it down to Jetdrivers.  Just keep wiping it up.  Will check level again in the am, and see how much I lost over 400 miles.

Got a seal, found out what happened.  The nuts on the pegs that go into thw wheel dampers loosened up, and one came off and  put a small hole in the rear end!  Fixed temp with jb weld. Never heard of that happening!

Wow, I never heard of one of them coming loose.  I think the factory tightens them to a million ftlbs.  I never tried to loosen one because the book says not to try to......and theres not a reason to, but man, theres a new one for ya

I think GiG had a similar issue a few yrs ago. Something broke/came loose inside and beat up the wheel.
