How do you know its time for a valve job ?? Engine is not sounding like  its running at a perect sounding rythm.  Bike has 17k miles  and all else is fine.

Even HDs don't need valve jobs at least twice that mileage.
Of course they don't need valve adjustments due to having hydraulic lifters.

Seems weird to be talking about a bike that has 17K on it.....Could be the carbs are gunked up from not be used.  But around 20K or so is the most common first valve adjust, so you are right there ready for it.....just do it and see if it changes anything, probably wont....then get after those carbs

The Valkyries do have a little bit of a lope at idle.  Is it possible this is what you are hearing?

Typically, you will hear the lifters clacking a little when you are out of adjustment.  Just make sure that if you do adjust the lifters to do a carb sync after.  Chances are, your carbs are a little out of whack and that is causing the problem.  But for the piece of mind, the valve adjust and carb sync is not that hard to do.  If you don't have the service manual, you can download it from Dag's Norway Valkyrie site  (<---click the link to start the download).

With that low of mileage, my guess is the carbs may be a little clogged. Cheapest and easiest first try to correct is add a half can of SeaFoam to your tank and ride it. Might do the trick.

My Valk only had 12k on it when I checked the valves, I had a particularly noisy rattle on the left hand side and sure enough one of the exhaust valves was twice the gap it should have been, I also had to adjust one other exhaust valve that was not so far out. So if it's rattling, it's worth checking them.

A compression test will let you know the condition of each cylinder including valves.. The term valve job means valve removal and seating/grinding.. A leaking valve will show up with this test..

A valve adjustment check should be performed every once in awhile.. These engines are not known for valves going out of adjustment.. Its nice to check them at about your mileage just to see where they're at and you may find a couple that need a slight adjustment [unless someone has been in there before]..

If the engine is just not idling like it should then chances are there are a couple carburetors out of adjustment.. If this monster has set for any length of time then there is a good chance the low speed jets could be varnished and in need of cleaning.. A full can of Sea-foam well mixed with fuel and several tanks of dosed fuel run thru it may help.. If it continues to run rough then a sync may be in order or a good carb cleaning..

Going by the book it's every 12,000 miles.

it is a game of semantics...but they are solid lifters.

GoldWing 1500s due have hydraulic lifters, but the Valkyrie rocker arms ride on the rocker shaft. They activeate directly on the camshaft and on the valve stem. Thus no lifters.

If you ever have the oppurtunity to see a GoldWing valve train and a Valkyrie valve side by side, you'd be surprised at how complex the GWs are.

+1 on a compression test. +1 on the overhead cam explainantion with no lifters. I have had to do my valves as the PO burnt three of them, over course not all on the same head. The job is not a big deal if you follow the Clymer shop manual, the manual will also explain the compression test and what to look for in the way of ranges. A special valve spring compressor is need, I ordered mine through JP Cycles. It worked great.

Good luck. Keep us posted.

I did a valve job at 80000 miles .I did not need it but the heads were off for a small water leak into the oil.The valves were just like new but I lapped them anyway.the whole top end was clean and in perfect cond. You don't need a valve job just carb work and maybe an adjustment of the valves
