Gas prices going up in L.A. area, price just jumped 70 cents per gallon since yesterday.
Wife came home gas went up 20 cents at her station since this morning.
News says many, many places over $5.
My question is this just here in L.A. or is it happening to any of you out there?

Sorry if the question has been discussed already but didn't want to read thru a bunch of thoughts.

Sounds like everywhere.  It's 4.64 a gallon here for 87.   My dad saw on the news that some gas stations are running out of gas and they are hiring extra tow trucks for the weekend.  Crazy!

Oz, I read an article yesterday on Bloomberg, I think.  It said there was a refinery shutdown due to a power problem and they were having some trouble getting it restarted.  Additionally, it said Mom and Pop gas stations were not getting their tanks filled cause the cost to them was over $5/gallon.  And to make things worse the article said fuel can't be brought into the LA area from other parts of the state cause LA is still using summer blend fuel and the rest of the state has already switched to the winter blend.

It went up to 3.89 a week or so ago, and came down to 3.85 out in town.  Costco prices are a little lower here ... filled up the car yesterday at 3.72 gal at Costco and will probably take the truck and some cans for the bikes/mower.

I hear you Oz.  I live in L.A. and my wife and I both work in Pomona.  Our hours are different so no carpooling.  I'm on the bike and she's in her Explorer.  It's getting STUPID expensive.  I don't drive my truck at all, just the bike.

Our plan for the winter?  Rebecca gets a smaller more fuel efficent car and I get a new rainsuit.

Educate me on this. I thought that the major difference in gas price between here and the UK was the way your government taxes the fuel to pay for social programs? I know that oil is traded on the world market and we all compete for a part of the same pie. If what I understand is correct, then we are comparing apples and oranges. It may sound "easy" and "cheap" but for people who have to depend on private transportation for their living it is anything but.

That's a completely different issue than gasoline prices.  While the price of oil is a big factor, my non-expert understanding is that short-term fluctuations in gas prices has more to do with domestic supply and demand, which has to do with US refineries and the distribution to your local area.

FWIW, eliminating outside suppliers would increase prices because of of reduced competition.  Isn't that concept anti-American?  Evil

Just heard on the news that California are having supply issues and will affect nearby states soon they predict, but not all 50 states, or so I hope.  They predict gas prices will fall back down in a few weeks once supply issues get straightened out in CA.  Hang in there, siphon your neighbors gas if you need to - LOL   Grin

CA has always been higher in gas than most other states.  Cost of living is more, but you get paid more as well, but still glad I don't live there.  Instead of being in the poor house, I'd be in the poorer house.

3.79 here in WI, and that is high enough for me, don't want to see it ever go up back to over 4 bucks per gallon, total B.S. if you ask me.

Hey oZ, years ago I used to question the price of gas in CA.     I was always told they had to truck it over the mountain to get it to ya.   That truck trip made it cost more.

Never checked into that, but is it true?

You will never eliminate competition unless the government forbids it through legislation. A few years ago I would have thought that would be impossible but today... who knows?  Anyway, any increase in global oil supply will result in a decrease in price.  It takes a lot though.

California has it's own problems.  One is a refinery fire, another is a pipeline leak, can't remember the other one. Probably will not move to other parts of the country. Mid Continet and East Coast pipelines are fine.

state taxes are another added onto the price, usually the lowest in the states is Missouri, the highest is Connecticut. Cali has high taxes too along with NY, MA, MI yada yada.....

I think it's a ploy by the big gas companys, they closed three refinery's in the Philadelphia area, claiming that they were losing money.  One was bought by an Airline to produce Jet fuel. Still
with reduced production they can claim reduced capacity and raise the prices !

Just look at their proffets posted each year. Our wallets are being raped daily and we take it with out a word.   tickedoff

+ 1.....this is the explanation I heard also with emphasis on the "special summer blend" issue.  Right or wrong, true or not, this is what I heard locally.....

I think the state tax is 19 cents a gallon.  California can't use other states' gas because of all the crap we put in the gas to make it more "clean".  Nothing you can do but change your driving habits and suck it up  Cry. I use my shadow 750 for commuting to work so I average 50mi/gal.  Not too bad.

With my wally wurld card i can get the price down to 3.469 a gallon fer 87 octane 10% ethanol. Right here where i live it's 3.599 a gal no discount. It was up around 3.699 a gal couple weeks ago. If any of you are around a Wal Mart that has a Murphy oil in front of it they are taking .10 cents a gallon of the street price with a gift card from Wal Mart. There are 2 other cards of theirs that will get you .15 centa a gal off but they charge a fee to load them. No fee is charged on their gift cards. I know i know-wouldn't go to wally wurld iffin ya held a gun on me. I need to make my dollars go as far as they can!!  cooldude And my cage and my Phatt Ghurl run pretty good on Murphy gasoline.
