I have a K&N air filter I want to donate to a neighbor.  It's been sitting in my shed for a bunch of years and the foam piece that is supposed to sit on the filter is deteriorating.  I checked the K&N site but they don't sell a replacement.

Has anyone used other foam?

If you ordered the correct width round one you could cut a piece to length.  Price is outrages for a piece of foam for your "Life Time Filter".

Last time I serviced mine I noted it was starting to go.

Had the Valk for nearly ten years and the K&N without the foam has been in there since day one. Never caused a problem, plugs look fine, mileage in the mid-upper 30's....if I behave.

The K&N in my bike was purchased 10-12 yrs ago came without a  foam pre-filter.  The one in question was purchased years later. 
I'm giving some thought to trying that green foam that goes in lawn mower air cleaners.

I agree that you may not even need one but just to be sure I contacted K&N and talked to a rep explaining that I purchased the bike used at that time 3 years in 07.  I wanted to purchase the foam prefilter because the old one was breaking down and about to handgrenade on me.  He at first didn't know what I was talking about but I think I had a  part number then.  He ended up sending one to me free of charge.  I do use the prefilter still and Moya still runs like a new bike.

242K+ miles on MGM and he has never had that stinkin foam filter in it.

Can get  upwards of 40 mpg if I don't get too heavy on the right handlebar.

Calling on my memory here - the prefilter was created to add restriction so the cleaner would have the same airflow as OEM, to prevent any difference in tune on the mixture.  So they make a filter that breathes better - than provide the ability to defeat that improvement thereby addressing that objection so as not to lose sales.  The prefilter also increases the incidence of filter maintenance.  Again from memory - IIRC - maintenance interval of the K&N is (I think) 100k miles.  OEM is a fraction of that.  I just checked mine recently, which had around 25k since last cleaned, but I had the tank off anyway, so I said check it while it's easy.  It was not very dirty, could have easily gone another 50k before cleaning.

I've run mine sans prefilter for 12 years or so.  Runs just great - but then I'm at high altitude where the mixture is dead on anyway, not running lean like low altitude causes.

I never used the foam.  I had a feeling I would have to service the "foam" part of it, WAY more often, than an OEM filter!!  Kind of would defeat the purpose, of switching to the K&N......which is LESS........filter service??  JMO........

My Bike was always jetted a little to "fat" for the OEM filter, and it finally came time to change the air filter, so dropping in the K&N was the "perfect" filter, to even things out.........runs PERFECT!!!!!

Bought a K&N for the '97 & it came sans foam. Called K&N and the rep said the foam pre-filter makes it flow very close to a stock filter which is the way I wanted it & sent me one for free. Over 40K & one cleaning all is good. I've had K&N's on many of my hot rods & race cars over the years... very familiar with them in use & concept.  cooldude
