I took the advice of RJ, Solo1 and LadyD and replaced the U-joint, the drive shaft and the pinion cup. At over 83,000 miles of 2-up riding, and a few times when I really got on it hard, I guess I should consider it "preventive maintenance," as RJ terms it.

I am just thankful that this didn't happen on the back roads we ride on our 2-month trips, when we don't see anyone for hours at a time and where there is never any cell phone service.

Anyway, we will now be able to ride to the Canadian Rockies as planned.
