I am curious to know who has high mileage Valks out there and never had a problem with reed body etc. Don't like to do stuff that ain't necessary. Desmog is not a biggie but also maybe overkill and not really necessary. Thanks Chuckie

I have 132K not desmogged. I would not have a problem about doing it if I thought it would help something that was a problem, but, so far there hasnt been any need so there hasnt been any changes to the smog system

Have not had any problem since I did a complete desmog about 75000 miles ago. Actually didn't have any problems before that either. I'm still glad I did it, got rid of all that junk under the tank and will never have a vacumn leak. Hoser

That is the same reason I did a desmog and I feel it is the most common reason why most do a desmog.
The reduction of possibilities of vacuum leaks is a good thing.

I have 168,000+ on my Standard which has never been desmogged. The only problems I've had are vacuum leaks in the lines solved by replacing or trimming the lines.
I'm going to get around to doing the desmog sometime (soon, I hope).

170K on my I/S and fully smogged No intention to desmog as of this time. Also, still have original vacuum lines and air filter.... And, I refer to my bike as medium mileage...

Original air filter???? 170K..........how is this possible? My 99 mileage unknown had such a dirty filter in it. It hardly ran at idle when I first got it going. I put in a new filter OEM and its run pretty good since. Just being inquisitive here nothing else.

The design of the air box intake lends to a first stage cleaning of the intake air by essentially centrifugal force (might be a better word for the action of air and particles having to turn a 180 degree corner to enter the box). Anyway it has even been to Alaska and ran some 500 miles of dirt and gravel roads, I did take it out and vacuum it off, thought it would be really dusty....but wasn't. So, will check it again at 200K and probably do a plug replacement .....will have 100K on the plugs at that point. Might as well confess the rest of my sins.....I still have the original brake and clutch fluids, I did change the coolant once at 100K with a non-silicate fluid. Still have Honda brake lines, not steel braid and haven't failed to stop my bike satisfactorily even once. Gone through a crap pot of headlight bulbs, the automotive ones don't seem to last as long as the OEM. Oh, the brake fluid has not gathered too much water as it is hygroscopic,,,,,I just use a 5 gallon bucket as a reservoir... ...hehehe, just kidding. I suspect that if a bike is used regularly year round the heating of the calipers will basically keep the fluid pretty dried out......thats my story and sticking to it... oh yeah, I get 32-40 mpg depending how much I twist the throttle.....got 17 mpg one time headed into a 40 mph wind and running 90+ out in New Mexico. Got 60K on my Pirelli P4 car tire, replaced it with an identical one a couple of weeks ago. Still have the original rear wheel bearings, changed the fronts at 150K due to one being a bit rough. (as an aside, contrary to a loudly proclaimed opinion, the 1800 Goldwing does not use double roll bearings in the final drive nor the front wheel as a upgrade to this single roll bearing in our Valks) Posted picks of the bearing after opening it up to see the failure mode....pitted... Never use more than a gentle water spray to wash the beast, usually no soap at all. Wax it occasionally with what ever comes out of the cabinet when I reach in..., Ok, now this is my story and am sticking to it

Not as many miles as some that posted on here but I have 103k on my still smogged bike. No problems from vacuum leaks and only on my second set of vacuum lines. Replaced them a few years ago with thicker-walled 5/32" ID Vacuum/Washer Fluid lines. Can't use the stock style clamps but I don't think you need to as the lines are being sucked onto the barbs. Not like they are going to blow off or anything.

I desmogged mine because the Pair Valve had an annoying "chirp" at low speeds that bugged the shot outa me . Couldnt see buying parts to put new reed valves in .

To each his own! However, to those who want to keep their bike as it came from Mother Honda, I have a great big box full of parts from 5 or 6 desmoged, low mileage Valkyries. Just send me a PM on what is needed. Personally, I would not trust any of the vacuum lines, but they are yours if you want them along with anything else removed for the actual cost of the shipping...Jim
