on three successive tanks crossing from Kansas to Ohio I went to reserve at 153, 175, and 161. Lori's '98, which gets slightly better mileage than my own, went to reserve at 164, 188, and 181. On that second tank we went 211 miles and the '98 still had at least ten miles in her. That 211 is by my odometer which normally measures 97 miles per 100 so the actual distance was more line 217. I think that may be a record for me.
We were on the flyway the entire day and rode with a fair amount of water in the air. I tried to cruise somewhere near 3500 but actually ranged at times from 3200 to 3700. Does high moisture content burn better than dry air?

There is less oxygen in humid air. If you run a little lean normally you may have better combustion when it is humid. I wouldn't expect you to get better gas mileage though. I typically go to reserve around 150 miles on my 98 standard, but at 6000 ft I may be running richer than most. Plus we have 10% ethanol at our stations.

Cooler air is more dense then warm air, meaning that you get more air in your cylinder when it's cool. Also, how much of that fuel you were burning had higher amounts of ethanol. I know that whenever I run fuel with even as little as 10% ethanol my mileage drops two to three miles per gallon guaranteed and on a 6 gallon tank that about right for your mileage.
I usually get about 190 miles per tank, my all time best was 210, but I’m sure that was mostly fumes!!

What is wrong with MINE? I go on reserve between 106 and 126 m ost times with a RECOERD of 138. I hit reserve at 128 and 132 yesterday.
Whaaaaa!!!!!!!
How tough is a desmog? and would that help?

Do you have the OEM petcock? I have heard that aftermarket petcocks can go to reserve earlier.

Dead stock from that aspect.
I am gonna replace it the next time I have the tank off just for protection sake... but it's still a stocker.

i am with Jabba on this one,, at 70 to 80MPH i hit reserve at 130 or so,,,i have 1 gallon left when it hits reserve,,,thats about 32MPG

well I have made 146 under 65 a couple of times /everything stock/now with ct>truck stacks<< I don't know /////can't keep my throttle from turning/for the sound.....vrooooooooom,vroooooooom..

One area that I ride nets me 41 mpg when I gas up at the half-way point. 2-up, gentle grades that allow for minimal shifting, and steady speed hovering around (+/-) the 3K mark on the tach in high gear. I've made this trip numerous times in the past ten years and never went to reserve on the OEM gas valve (Pingel the past three years). This is the only road near me with conditions conducive to that kind of performance. Everywhere else in my travels nets me about 35 mpg on average. Gotta realize that every change in speed, gear, wind direction, and flick of the wrist results in a different fuel flow for the moment.

I've got a '97 standard. Reserve is almost always at 120/130 miles.
Overall gas mileage all these years is 32mpg. I once got 37 but that was unusual. The sidecar drops it down to 26/28.

so far, 97std
commuting, seems to run at about 32 mpg, hitting reserve at 135.
On the only trip I made, holding 70 pretty steady N through PA and NE in NY, with 1/2 bottle of gumout in the tank at the first stop, and the rest in on the ride back, I got 36MPG out and back.

Keep the rpm's less than 3000 and you'll be surprised how far you can go.....but why have a Valkyrie if you are going to drive like that…..

Jabba I am with you I am averaging about 25-28 mpg on a 01 Standard with two brothers 6x6 exhaust. That is when I don't twist the throttle. In a previous post Willow stated he did not know of any mpg increase with a desmog. I am thinking a carb sync and adjustment is in order. I don't have the setup or experience to do it so not sure when I will get it done. |

update for today,,,
today we rode the back roads at 55 to 60 most of the time and i went riding 2 up to 157 miles before reserve,,,this was a first for me because most of the time i am running 75 to 80 and getting about 33MPG when doing that...today was right at 39MPG...
