Im a big fan of muzzleloaders. Even during our shotgun season ill use my muzzleloader. That is actually what I learned to hunt with. One shot one kill, always make your first shot count, and when you only have one shot it is easy to learn.

Even when hunting semi-auto or bolt action, we had a saying for when we heard a gun go off in the deer woods. One shot - one deer. Two shots - maybe. Three shots - nothing.

I sure love deer huntin',, but,, not with the Valk !!  I've had a few close calls with the Valk but haven't made contact yet.. A number of years ago a 6 pt came out in front of me so I started to go around behind him when he changed his mind and swapped ends.. He jumped over the front fender and I still don't know how he didn't get into the windscreen or in my lap..
There are more deer around here than ever and they are on the move,, its just about the peak of the rut now..

Never had to avoid one with the Valkyrie yet.
But firearm season opens soon and I'll be out there watching in Michigan's UP.

I am a muzzle loader hunter.  MOST of the time... even in firearms season.

I have recently started hunting a little bit with my deceased brothers bolt action shotgun.

Generally, I am a smoke pole hunter though.

I took my first 17 deer with a Knight muzzleloader I built from a kit. I glass bedded the action and it was a tack driver with real black powder, 3/4"" to  1 1/4" groups with 240grain xtp bullets consistently. I've never killed a deer with a shotgun even though I live in a shotgun state. For firearms season I always used a muzzleloader (TC 50cal Encore now) or my 7mm08 scoped handgun (same encore frame, different barrel and grip).

Now I still use the encore as a muzzleloader during blackpowder season but during firearms season I use a 460 S&W magnum carbine barrel on the same TC frame.

The .460 was a few tenths too long to be legal here to begin with so I trimmed my brass down to legal length and came up with a reduced load to match the case length. I call it the .460 Hoosier and it shuts deer off like flicking a switch if you hit em right. Never had one take more than 5 steps, they usually drop in their own footprints. The 460 S&W magnum is legal here now but since I've got some 460 Hoosiers still loaded up I'll be hunting with them again this year.

I hav ed heard of guys buying the 460 hoosier. I guess a guy in bloomfield is selling them. My opinion is why buy a specialaty gun like that when in just a few years you will probably be using high powered rifles. I just cant see spenfing the money on a whole gun, but in your case you did good. already had the 460 and just shortened the cases.

I hunted black powder for YEARS...  built a kit TC 50cal Hawkens.  set up a range in the back yard.  100 yards shooting off of sand bags... could keep 5 shots under 3 inches with iron sights. Offhand was a bit bigger, but still in a kill zone.  Most of my hunting shots were 25 to 30 yards, still hunting on the ground.
Was a ton of fun, and I took a 5 deer a year for about 20 years with it!   Just doin my part to keep the deer off the roads!!! cooldude  LOL

I really need to go dig the lead out of that backstop hill!!!!!  I could re-cast some bullets or some fishing weights!  LOL

I'll be darned. As far as I knew I was the only one to think of it and had the only ammo for it ever made.  Embarrassed It's obsolete now anyway since the 460 S&W is legal starting this year.

I shoot .54 cal Knight muzzleloaders.  I am solid 3" groups at 100 yards.  I shoot 450 grain solids with a purple .50/.54 sabot.  Yeah... turns them off like a switch.  I have had a FEW run... but not many.

I have been using my brothers bolt shot gun a little.  I cut one ragged hole with 3 shots at 80 yards this afternoon.

I am like HotGlue.  Most of my shots are 10-40 yards, and I have killed one as close as 5 FEET.  All on the ground.  I have NEVER killed a deer out of a tree stand.  I have killed 54 deer, (I think) in about 20 years.  I could kill more than I do.

Now Squealy has a muzzleloader... if you WANT to call it that.  The Savage 10ML smokeless.  It shoots smokeless rifle powder.  WOW.  That thing is accurate, and has RANGE.  It ain't fair to be called a muzzleloader.  He head shoots them at 150 yards.  I have SEEM him do it.

PA has a FLINTLOCK season, and a season for those muzzleloaders with skirts. Smiley
Its a custom built by Getz. His rendition of a PA barn gun with a upgraded lock and a std cal bore because its a hunting rifle. PA barn gun, 1/77 twist, 54 cal, and in this pic a french flint that was cut off a cannon flint however it seems to like english at least as well. Stoke it with 70gr of 2F with 4 in the pan. Its minute of deer at 100, probably could do better if the guy behind it took the time to get a little more anal with it.
i have owned this one for 1 season and it put up a doe so far.

Another Knight .54 cal. smokepole here, along with an old Darton bow and multitudes of centerfire rifles. I take 2-3 deer per year and always make sure there is at least one doe and preferrably two taken per year!

Its a Savage 10ML-II. They are actually out of production now.  Its a BEAST.  It converted me from being a slug gun hunter to a muzzleloader hunter.  I've not even go the slug gun out for several years now....  He's right, I've shot several deer in the head at over 100 yards, out to 150ish put the cross-hairs where you want it hit and squeaze the trigger.....

Its minute of deer at 100,   end quote..  LOL,, I like that !!

I pretty much stopped firearm hunting [deer] 30 years ago.. I may go out once in a while if someone wants to go.. I only hunt right around the house and there are plenty of 'stickable' bucks to keep the freezer full.. I may be too old fashioned,, but,, I can't bring myself to shot a girl.. I don't carry a rope so I need a set of handles to hang onto.. And, at my age, I don't hang on to them for very long.. Only long enough to get them in the tractor..
One of the last times I went gun hunting I had an interesting bet with a friend..

I don't hunt (Nothing against it, would love to do it, just can't afford it) but I've got a CVA .50 muzzle loader I love to shoot. Ya' learn to really take your time and aim carefully when shooting a muzzle loader!

Also have a .44 black powder revolver with 12" barrel, also a blast to shoot...

Lots of respect for anyone that hunts with a flintlock! I'd love to get one one day but the new firearm budget has been SEVERELY cut back for the next 18 or so years for me...

Ditto on the respect for hunting with flintlock.. The lock time on the percusion cap is pretty long....  I would think the flintlock would be longer... plus having the flash by your face....  If you flinch.... it will sure show up with a muzzle loader!!!!!

When my father-in-law was still living, wife and the younger kids came back to visit during deer season..     He had 2 smoke poles and I carried one, don't have a clue what it was.      All I know, if you were real good at holding still till the boom, it was very accurate.

One year we set up in the loft of his barn and pop shot one for each tag we had.

The barn was like 50 yards from the timber line, and there was a small steam that run between the timber and the barn.

Loved it when they tipped their head down for a drink and the next thing they knew they were going into the freezer.

Then we caught the next flight to California so as I could go to work and make some $$$$$ to pay the bills.

season opens for a week on 11/16 in Alabama.  I have a Sweet shooting Austin & Halleck 420 -  50 cal. nickle barrel that I pack with 100grains of Pyrodex and it pushes the 250gr Barnes expandable out as far as 250 yards  DEADLY accurate. Also have a Knight  Wolverine 50 cal.  Both use 209 primers.
 Nothing like it
 One shot One kill
 then fill the freezer

Its not that bad. There is a learning curve to them and each one has a sweet combo of flint type and pan powder amount and placement, but once you find it, you hear the flint scrape the frizzen but you won't hear it bottom out. You NEED real black powder to make a flinter work. The fake stuff has to high of a ignition point.

A good flinter will beat the lock time on a percussion. As to flinch, don't Smiley  Lyman GPR is a good commercial rifle that you can get in a roundball twist, thats what I started flinting with. You have to change the vent to make it faster, and it is still not as fast as a custom, but I took deer with it and it would shoot 3 in groups at 127 yards with 50 cal roundball.

When we lived in North Carolina, we used to go to the black powder shoots they used to hold up in the mountains.  Some of them mountain boys were pretty rough looking but man could they shoot.  They were shooting stuff with open sights that I could barely see.  My favorite one though was where they'd stick a double edged axe in the end of a log and then they'd mount a plate on either side of it.  The objective was to hit the edge of the axe, split the ball and break both plates.  I don't remember whether the range was 50 or 100 yards, but most of 'em had no problem breaking both plates.

Lots of great guns you guys are shooting. I have an old Hawkin 50 cal that's killed a few deer over the years. I am thinking about buying a new smoke pole. I'm thinking something affordable, like a T/C omega, or impact or something along that price range. Any of you guys have any of those rifles?  Any suggestions or things to stay away from?  These newer rifles are all over the place as far as price goes, but are their features to stay away from?

I've been muzzleloader deer hunting a time or two.  Started with a T/C Renegade I built from a kit, it came in .54 but I had a Green Mountain drop in replacement .50 slow (round ball) twist barrel on it when I took it hunting for the first time, due to work giving me an opportunity to field test Nyclad round balls.  Then went to a Mowrey .54 1N30 for a number of years, followed by a Kodiak .50X.50 double.  All the while interspersed w. the Renegade now and again.  Those are all outa here now.
At the moment I can choose between a Lyman GPR in .50, a Browning Mountain Rifle in .45 and a .50/209 barrel on the T/C Encore.
Probably going to use the Encore setup in WI if I hunt there w. a frontstuffer at all this year (depends on how their regular firearms season goes for me) because that state now allows scopes on M/Ls and I can easily put glass on that gun.
I've got my MN tag for the M/L season and plans for that revolve around either the Browning or the Encore without the scope, depending on the weather and my luck during the WI seasons.

I built a .32 cal from a kit my parents got me for christmas a few years ago. Cant remember the name of it. I ended up sanding tbe stock to a custom fit for me. It has a 36 inch barrel. Wanted a flint lock but ended up with a cap. Love squirrel hunting with it.
As for my deer gun its a knight 50 cal inline. Stainless with black thumb hole stock. I have killed deer out to 225 yards with that gun.

Started hunting this season with a CVA optima 50 cal muzzlerloader. Shooting 100grams of white hot powder and a powerbelt 295gr hollow point. Missed my first deer at 120yds. Saturday afternoon but Sunday morning killed a 9 pointer at 80yds. I think the first one was all me as I rushed the shot and didn't wait for a good angle on the deer. I'm sold on this gun and will enjoy the longer season also.

My first muzzleloader was TC Hawken I built from a kit. I shot a lot of lead through that rifle but never took a deer with it. I loved the double set triggers, always meant to build myself a bolt action rifle with set triggers but never got around to it. A local gunshop owner saw it and had me build demo's of all his kit muzzleloaders to display to the public. All were percussion cap rifles though, I've never shot a flintlock.

Just bought some white hot powder today along with my trusty hornady sst 250 grain sabots. Going out tomorrow to see how it shoots compared to 777 powder. Some say its hotter som say not so much. I say ill be the judge of that and test it out myself.

I was told it (white hot) burns cleaner but I still try to clean between each shot. I have found that after 3 shots the grouping seems to drop off. I just like the pre formed loads as it seems easier to control charge than loose powder. My first year with a black powder and I'm having a ball.

Triple 7 pellets are very dirty after shooting. I was just looking for a cleaner burning powder. Didnt get a chance to shoot today. Im taking it with me when I go to the woods in the morning. Still archery season here but ill shoot it when I get out of the woods. Cut out some nice deer targets from cardboard to shoot at. Should be fun

I shoot 777 powder.  I am not a fan of the pelletized powder.

It's been good for me.

I might go back to good old fashioned Goex black powder.  I sort of miss the SMOKE plume after the shot.

I agree. I sometimes shoot 777 pellets but I like the loose powder better. 117 grains of loose 777 shoots to the same place as 150 grains of pellets does in my encore.

I have a Navy Arms 1st Mod Colt Dragoon replica.  On July 4 1976, in a fit of patriotism, I blew up a nearly full can of FFFG in my right hand.  Remarkable pain from 1st and 2d degree burns from the waist up (no shirt) (fully recovered without residual).  I lost interest in black powder after this.

I ended up marrying my afternoon shift nurse from the hospital.  I've lost interest in hospitals too.
