I installed my new Kuryakyn 7429 Wide Style Levers yesterday and they look and feel awesome. However, the brake side lever does not spring back all the way when you engage the brakes. I browsed through this board and read that you have to file off a piece of the lever to make it fit, but can't find a description (or even better a picture) of what needs to be filed away. I assume that once I manipulated the levers they cannot be returned, so I want to make sure I do this right. Below are pictures from both sides of the lever:

Has anyone done this?

Have you cleaned up that area behind the lever?? Mine was pretty well gunked up. I've got Kury wide levers on my I/S and did NOT modify anything. And they work and release very smoothly. I also mounted the new levers with new bolts. RIDE SAFE.

That's some pretty good advice (cleaning the area), and then put a little lubricant also on all the places where movement occurs.

Possibly when you installed them, you tightened down too much and pinched the pivot area. Along with some grease, try loosening the pivot bolt.

If they're like the GL1800 adjustable levers there's a raised ring, I think about 1 1/4" round and raised maybe 1/8th (if I remember right) on the bottom around the pivot hole that I ground flat. fixed that exact issue for me.

filing off a bit around where the bolt goes did it for me. Thanks everyone, very happy I dont have to return them. They look and feel much better than stock. Happy Thanksgiving!

I know this is an old post that i am reviving, but i just had the same issue with kuryakyn 7429 levers on the brake side on my 2001 standard.  In this thread, nobody states what year the bikes are having the problem, but i am willing to bet they are not 04 - 07.

Looking closer at the fitment information on the back of the kuryakyn package, it states this part number is only for "07 - 04 VALKYRIE (ALL MODELS EXCEPT RUNE)".   I went to the kuryakyn website and read the part description for part number 7429 and it states the same thing.   Apparently, there is some slight difference in the brake lever mount on different model years.  The kuryakyn brake lever at the brass pivot measures 18.66mm and the space on my 2001 brake mount measures about the same.  Thus, tight fit.  The OEM brake lever measures 18.30 at the brass pivot.

Unfortunately, the vendor site i bought the levers from did not list this info so i thought the levers fit all years.

"07 - 04 VALKYRIE (ALL MODELS EXCEPT RUNE)".

Valkyries were made from 97 - 03, and are all pretty much alike...

If you have levers that work for others here, I bet they'll work for you...

the grinding off of a tab ONLY applies if you bought levers for the 1800 Wing and then its the clutch lever that has an extra tab NOT the brake

I have not had to deal with levers in 10 years and was not aware of the Wing levers.  I did some research and I like what i found.  Thanks for the idea!!   cooldude
