In the past I have used Gumout Regain as a carb cleaner. Used it going west this yr. Regain is suppose to increase MPG. And it does. I normally get 32 mpg. Used regain and get 38 mpg. Its constant for the 1st 300 miles or so then it slowly drops back to 32 mpg after 5-600 miles. So how does it work? And why dont it stay at 38 mpg? Something I wondered for awhile.  uglystupid2

I would think it has more to do with speed, vehicle weight, and wind direction vs. direction of travel.  I find it hard to believe that any additive you put in the tank would have that kind of impact on fuel economy.  If you really want to verify this.

get 1 gallon of fuel with no additive and 1gallon of fuel + additive (1 gallon total)

Drain your tank, add a gallon of either fuel and drive at a constant speed until you run out of fuel (preferably in kansas on a flat straight road)record distance traveled. Add the other gallon of fuel and continue to drive until you run out,  record and compare distance traveled.

I bet you wopn't see much difference.

Most carb cleaners are just solvents that dissolve deposits.

It only works with the Regain. No other cleaner. Did it last yr to the Ind Ride with kit and luggage. 38 mpg. Did it again going to Sturgis. 1 up fully loaded. From home to Iowa was 38 mpg. Then each stop it slowly returned to normal by the time I got to Sturgis. 75-80 mph and filling up at 125 ish miles.

Ive had a similar experience when using Techron a full bottle to 5 gallons of gas in any bike.
Or in my Z 28 a bottle for every 20 gallons of fuel.
In the car on the higway.
Mileage will increase from its normal 21 mpg to almost 28 for the same speed and distance.
I believe that the additives make the gasoline burn more effectively.
Chevron adds techron at the pump but in much smaller per gallon amounts.
As a mileage booster both products do work and work well.
But it is NOT cost effective per gallon to achieve it.
Its cost per gallon simply doesnt justify its use every tankfull.
Of course your not going to get the mileage benifit once its been consumed.
But you will have a cleaner bunch of carbs which in itself should increase your mileage a bit.
