It's a real pain in the butt to get a title here if the owner has lost it. The best way for us to get the title is to have the ownre apply for the lost title. You could end up paying a lot of money and time to get this done. Mybe better left alone, unless you are gonna part it  |

Don't know how it is there but here it takes about 10 minutes to file for a lost title, all is needed is the owners name and license #, they can look up the vehicles registered to him and issue the paper work for a transfer.
Title or no title, if the price is right.......................

Sounds fishy to me. Why would someone not want to spend the 10 minutes it would take to file for a replacement title to then be able to get the full retail price for the bike? Maybe the bike was in the flood also and he had it totaled and that is why he doesn't have the title. Or it is stolen and the whole story is a lie. I would run the Vin with someone (carfax or local police) and see what the real story is. If you go the bill of sale route, make sure he signs it in front of a notary, with proper ID. Otherwise it's just a piece of paper.

Like everyone here is saying, cover your bases.
If it is a good price and getting the title is a problem, you might want to consider parting it out and buying another Valk that has a clear title.
I have seen frames for sale on Ebay but don't know about title, you might want to contact the people selling the frames and ask them about the title.
Some people part out perfectly good Valks and they might sell you the frame with a clean title.
I suppose it all depends on the price

In Jersey all you have to do to get a replacement title is:
You'll need to apply for a replacement title if yours has been lost or stolen. Visit your local Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) Agency and bring a completed application, your current registration papers, and proof of insurance.
You can also mail your application. Just send a copy of your current registration papers and proof of insurance with the application and fees to:
State of New Jersey
Motor Vehicle Commission
Special Services
P.O. Box 017
Trenton, NJ 08666-0017
The cost for replacing a lost or stolen title is $60.
I would be suspicious of anyone not willing to go through those simple steps and pay $60 bucks, but that's just me.

Be careful. here in ND easy to get a replacement title. Just File a form, and I believe $10.
If you buy the bike, then try to get the title, VERY hard, if not impossible.
Have him get a replacement title, THEN but the bike.
Sounds fishy to me.

Yep, same here. I think it's about $15 for a duplicate. I would check with you local motor vehicle registration dept...(court house) Could be well worth the effort. |

Problem is is that if its a Sandy flood bike, the motor, final drive(?) would both be Junk. Salt water is BAAAAAAADDDDDD.

i bought a car like this last year. took the guy to the dmv, they did the transfer directly to me in 20 mins. then i took him out for a $40.00 lunch for his time.

bike was in a garage never saw any water at all and he wants double the price we are at rite now if he has to deal with getting the title
Sounds like there is something fishy there. I wouldn't walk away, I'd run away. Duplicate titles are very easy to get in any state. I think it is Hawaii that is the hardest to get one from. California, go to the DMV office and apply, takes like 6 to 8 weeks for Sacramento to process them however. |

Something fishy going on, as mentioned several times before. Maybe you are happy with just a parts bike. But, what if, and probably, it is stolen?
I would NOT do the deal without the title. There is NO good reason NOT to have a title to transfer.

I would suspect that no title means he quit making payments on a financed bike. They would like to repo it, but he moved and they can't find it. Or it was stolen. If the title was just misplaced, he would get another one from his highway dept.

I do not know if it will still work, but I used to deal with this issue often. First , run the VIN to see if stolen (if so report it) or declared totaled.
A total is not always physical damage. It could be flood or in a room with a dead body and has an odor. If VIN search is clean , then you can ,in Illinois get a power of attorney for title. The paperwork is filled out and title is sent to you. If there is any hesitation on the sellers part, run as you report it as a possible ( YES,possible)stolen bike.
