My '97 Tourer is reliable to a fault. But now I have a dead one in the garage. I have good battery, headlights, signals, horn, all power. When I push the starter button, headlights go dark, high beam and neutral lights on headlight bucket go away too. I had bypassed the side stand switch a few years ago and replaced the starter relay about a year ago. Any ideas where to look. It seems like a starter relay to me especially since the relay and the plug seemed to be glued together.

thanks in advance.

Check that and your starter button switch.

If the starter switch was dead, would the lights go out?

Is there a way to jumper the starter switch to check that angle? or is there a way to jumper the relay to check that out?

If it was the Starter Relay, the whole bike would be dead.  No lights, no nothing.

Possible ground problem?

Yes. Every time you press the starter button to start the bike, the head light goes out. It needs all the juice it can to start the bike.

You can have the switch apart and cleaned in 5 min. Thats a good place to start, esp if it has never been done.

Hey young feller up there in Wiskeyconsin.  "would be dead", NOT always...

Some you can turn the engine over but no fire to the plugs with the relay out.
My 1st one was dead in the water, cause everything had melted in the connector, my last one, pictured, would roll the engine over, just no fire.......

Here is the replacement to use if it is out.

You will have to move the big red wire to a different slot.  Move it to where it matches the old unit.  This kit is for an older Gold Wing...  Valkyrie, they want to sell you the whole loom.

So many people has problems with the starter switch and Honda sells them for around $70.00 bucks. When I get home I'm working on something that will do away with that switch and install a different one. The one I plan on using can be bought at any local auto store for less that $20.00 bucks. Once I get all the info together I will post it. On the starter issue switch you can turn the key on and jump across the two main wires. If it turns over and cranks you have a starter swtich issue. Also even though it turns over if any of the wires that plugs into the starter switch are corrided it will not start.

If when you push the starter button do you here the syliniod clicking?

If so then.
Take your side cover off, put bike in nuetral, uncover the rubber protecting the battery cable conection at the starter syliniod and cross the starter conection and the battery conection.
If it turns over - then replace you starter syliniod.
This happend to me about 2 months ago, local bike store had a Goldwing Starter silyniod in stock, works just fine now.

You could try tapping on the syliniod with a screw driver while pushing the starte switch.
