I just replaced both front and back brake pads.  Previous pads were about 60% gone.

My question:  Is it normal for the brakes to make noise like rubbing afterwards when not applying the brakes?  If so, how long til the noise goes away?  I used OEM on the rear and another brand (EBC) on the front.

Thanks

I could be wrong - somebody correct me if I am.  I believe a slight noise is normal but you shouldn't feel much drag when you spin the wheel.  The calipers will release pressure on the rotor when you release the lever or pedal but there isn't anything (like a backward pressure) to make the calipers back away from the rotor.  As long as you don't have excessive drag on the wheel or any heat build-up, you're good.

I noticed after installing and rolling backwards it was dragging some and more difficult.  I went for about a 3 mile ride and after that it rolled fine.  I did check for heat and they seemed normal.

If you put new pads on used rotors there is naturally a brake-in period for the pads. They're trying to feel comfortable in their new digs!

When you put new break pads on the pistons have to be pushed back into the caliper and some dirt can be pushed into the caliper as well. This can cause the tension not to release as much as it should when the break is released. It will loosen up after a few days. I spray the pistons with break cleaner before pressing them back into the caliper when removing the old pads.

If the noise is coming from the front and there is a noticeable drag then it will be on the left side and is caused by the front axle not being seated properly.

Are you using EBC rotors on the front as well?

I should add that if the axle is not seated properly then taking a short ride will not cure the problem... it won't go away until the axle is fully seated.

You said you put EBC pads on the front? I can't speak from personal experience, but I have read many times on this board that EBC pads on an OEM rotor was bad news. They have stated they are noisy and wear out the rotor faster than the norm. They recommend EBC pads on EBC rotors only. If I recall right there have been quite a few that had to replace their rotors because of the heavy wear from EBC pads. Am I remembering right? If so I would think OEM pads should be a high priority.  Cool

the local honda shop up here tried to sell me EBC pads over their honda OEM pads. I don't know why. He was fairly insistent. EBC is cheaper. But it is my understanding that the EBC have a higher metallic content or a denser metal that they're made of and wear the rotor faster. My rotors are original OEM 98, and will need to be replaced sometime, but I didn't want to speed that along.
He finally consented to ordering me a set of OEM pads (oddly he didn't have the EBCs in stock either and they would have taken longer to come in).
I've always heard run OEM on OEM and EBC on EBC. My next rotors will be EBC and I'll switch the pads then too. I plan on switching all three rotors at the same time to make it easier, which is why I'm putting it off for a little while.

EBC are noisey! Used mine for 50 miles and got others. I use pads by Braking.
