FOR THE CAMPERS and RVers going to INZANE!13 in LaCrosse.

http://www.pettiboneresort.com/

this looks like it may be the closest campgrounds to Ground zero.
I have not checked it out,   has anyone stayed there?  and its on an island in the Mississippi.

Pettibone will be the closest campground to ground zero. It'll end up being a short ride thru LaCrosse. It's sort of an island ob the river, and is a pretty nice place. If anyone has any questions about the area, get a good of me. I'm local!

Consider that there is limited access to Ground Zero on French Island.  Pettibone Resort is also on an island.  It appears to have a restaurant and bar, somethings I usually look for.  But I intend to look into Veterans Memorial Campground which is 9 miles East of Ground Zero and a direct shot to it without going through La Crosse.  Will call them on 4/15 when it is first staffed for the season.  It is a county campground and they do not take reservations.  I will update all when I have more info.   cooldude

I'm very interested in camping information in the area.
We're not comfortable with not having reservations though.  I don't feel like dragging the trailer all that way and not knowing for sure I have a spot to camp. (I do like the sound of not having to go through town to get to ground zero however.)
I'll check some out over the net too and if I find anything interesting I'll post as well.
T.P, I think we'll be counting on you for some local intel!

I'm about 70 miles from La Crosse, much closer than T.P.  As soon as it warms up, I'll make a run over and investigate the campgrounds.  I have four on my list; Pettibone, Goose Island, Veterans Memorial and Neshonoc.  As far as I can see on the web, they all have +'s and -'s but currently Pettibone is my top contender.  Refer to: http://www.cityoflacrosse.org/index.aspx?NID=1338

WAIT, that's assuming that it will ever warm up.   Shocked

Went over to get a first hand look at the campgrounds around La Crosse today.  Visited three; Veterans Memorial near West Salem, Goose Island south of La Crosse and Pettibone on Barton Island just South of French Island.  As you know, GZ is at the Days Inn on French Island just South of I-90.  In my visits, it is unfortunate that I did not, or was unable to, view the campground bath facilities, something my wife an daughter insisted on doing before checking in to campgrounds many years ago.  Oh well...  Here is some of the information I gained and my personal impressions:

  • Veterans Memorial is a clean quiet La Crosse County campground that is 8.7 East of GZ.  They do not take individual reservations but will accommodate groups.  They had a group of Blue Knights coming in sometime this year.  From GZ you get on I-90 East and take Exit-5 WI-16 East.  I eliminated Veterans Memorial from my list due to the reservation issue and due to what appeared to be the start of road construction on the stretch of WI-16.
  • Goose Island is also a La Crosse County campground that is 12.6 miles from GZ.  I gave very little thought to this campground due to location.  Access to it is off WI-35, South of La Crosse, so travel to it requires going through city traffic and lights in the heart of the La Crosse.  So Goose Island was also dropped from my list.
  • Pettibone Resort is also on a river island and accessed directly off US-61 (also US-14).  It is 5.2 or 7.5 miles from GZ depending upon the route you take.  From GZ, on the Wisconsin side, South on French Island and through the North end of La Crosse and city traffic it is the 5.2 miles.  Crossing over to the Minnesota side on I-90 and turning South on US-61 taking you back to Barton Island it is 7.5 miles, but time wise this may be faster.  Pettibone Resort is my personal choice and I have already reserved tent site 600.

On line information on all of these campgrounds is available at:
http://www.cityoflacrosse.org/index.aspx?NID=1338

I hope this helps all you Inzane Campers...

Great write-up!  Those camping will appreciate the time you took to check it out personally.

Thank you so much Plunker!
It looks like it's Petibone for us. I'm calling there now for a spot.
I'll post back with my assigned space so anyone wanting to camp in the same area can do so,  angel or so they can avoid us either.   Embarrassed

UPDATE
We have reserved slot 104 at Petibone right on the river.  We will be able to open the back ramp of the Raptor and use it for a porch and watch the river in the evenings!
This is gonna’ be great!   Cool  (Now I’m off to the registration page...)
