and it works ......BUT....... after i finished i saw on the floor a 1" long and about 3/4 dia rubber thingie.
it is slit down the middle like it would  slide over something.
on the piece itself is the number T23714.
it looks like and is about the size of a wooden spool that your wifes thread comes on.
any idea what this critter my be?
can't imagine it being to terribly important but would like to know what it is and
where it goes.
thanks to all the help you gave and shoptalk.

i need to learn how to post pictures, it sure would help wouldn't it.

It sounds like the grommet that is in the hole on the back of the headlight shell that the wires run through. It is there to keep the wires from rubbing on the metal shell.

I am thinking that it goes on the wiring harness as already stated.  Here are a couple of pictures that may help.

I would think that's the grommet that holds the brake line at the fender mounting area.

you guys are good, it is like the one holding the brake line at the fender but that one is there.
it's from behind the faring cover somewhere and i can't find it without taking it apart.
it's a non critical part, at least until the wires get rubbed through.
when i have more time, like this winter, i will take the faring cover off and see what i can see.
so for  now, i'm outta here for a little ride.
thanks and happy fathers day.
