What does the data say?

...we've found your kind of place.

Disco and I made a trip to Ammo Depot in Caddo Mills today.  We were clued in to it by a contractor where we work who has been helping build the new range at Ammo Depot.

Like everyone else, they are hand-to-mouth on hand guns and "modern" (wink-wink, nudge-nudge, know what I mean?) long guns, but they cut me an incredible deal on an item (44% off Cabela's retail) without blinking an eye.

And, as a courtesy, we got to shoot some BIG stuff.  Stuff that costs $3.60/round for the cheap ammunition.

Details of the trip can be had in person.

And, if you're wondering whether we picked up ordered hardware, ordered more new hardware, arranged to trade collectable, old hardware for new hardware, or purchased "consumables", the answer is yes.   Wink

We shot some really cool hardware, too.   coolsmiley

Now that's a lot of exercise!   Cheesy

Ammo Depot is nice folks.

I've been buying guns from Mickey (Owner of Ammo Depot) since the early 90's. In fact, I've bought more guns from him than from any other single place. He used to have a shop in Mesquite, but decided to move out to the country to get away from the city and all that entails.

And yeah, him and the people that work for him are good people. They'll treat ya' fair and give usually the best price around.

Here's their website, btw:

Did you happen to see any Mossberg 500 pumps with pistol grip?

More makers are selling them with composite pistol grip/stock and fore end, but do not pay more than you have to.  There are plenty of parts kits available (Choate) for that setup for any riot gun, and changing the parts out is pretty easy.  Years ago I bought a well worn but serviceable Rem 870 police trade in, and the Choate kit, and the shop put it on for me before I left, no charge except the parts.

Another very nice addition is a XS big dot tritium  front sight.

Yes, I bought a new nickel plated  Mossberg 500 25 years ago and ordered a front pistol grip for it (it had the rear PG)
Some piece of sludge broke into my car including trunk and stole it.
I am thinking about replacing it. They don't make the nickel plated any more but no big deal.
I don't intend to pay top dollar so will look for a deal.
A pump shotgun 18.5" barrel is, in my opinion, the best personal defense weapon one can have inside one's home.

Probably the best personal defense weapon anywhere, except for longer distances and concealability.  Sorry to hear yours was snatched.

Was a time good used 18.5" shotguns were plentiful everywhere.  I feel the pistol grip (with full buttstock) is required because it allows you to easily hold someone under arms one handed, using the other to call the cops.  It can also take up nearly half the recoil from your shoulder.  A pistol grip alone is junk IMHO.

Not the cheapest, but my favorite today (grip-stock and extras must be added) is the Rem 870 express synthetic 7-round.  It is amazing how much weight is added with 7 OO buckshot loads (2 3/4)
Mossberg is every bit as good.

BTW, there is a new Charles Daly 12 gauge tactical riotgun (made in Turkey) going for much cheaper.  The Turks have been making decent shotguns forever.  I do not know much about them.

Danny, I was in Dick's Sporting Goods at NE Mall at 820 & 121 a couple of days back and they had some. Cabela's also had some two weeks ago when I was there.

Fortunately, shotguns are still pretty plentiful in stores. And, unlike ammo for pistols and black guns, shotgun shells are still everywhere.

And, to make sure I'm not hijacking the thread, yes, I'm definitely game for a ride out to Ammo Depot

I rode out to Ammo Depot Sunday, looks like I got there about 2 hours after you, but it was still closed...

If at all possible, please try to avoid Dick's... They've turned pretty sleazy...

Serk, thanks for this info. I knew they had stopped selling "tacticals" (which I complained about), but didn't know about this BS.  They are on the naughty list now.

We had a home invasion in October of 2011.  A woman who had just assaulted a police officer was fleeing and took refuge by bursting into our home seeking to hide.  They arrested her right here in my living room.  That prompted the purchase of this:

Then.. just this past Tuesday, I was putting the plastic back on the Gold Wing and had the door up on the Culley Cave.  I had walked over to my desk to look up a torque value for the rear shock bolts... and while I was sitting there, actually IN the garage looking at the manual... a young black fella with jaw length dreads walked right up into the garage and stole my bicycle... sneaked it right out the door, threw his leg over it was gone down the alley before I knew it!

That precipitated the purchase of this: $279.00

Both... true stories... where i live here in San Marcos is getting pretty scary.

My local and independent dealer is pretty much out of stock too. But, their website pointed me to Gunbroker.com of which I have no affiliation.  They have a lot of weapons and other stuff, both new and used condition. I know I know, this isn't Valkyrie related, but at least I got her name in there..

So if you go there to like to AD and find something you like and it won't fit in your saddlebag or trunk, what do you do?
Can you even take something home (if they have it in stock) even if it's your first picnic?

I've ridden home from many gun shows and stores with rifles and/or shotguns bungee'd to my passenger seat or luggage rack. I just ask 'em for a box, or if they don't have a box buy a cheap rifle case to put it in, then strap it on and head home...

Couldn't find a box or case once and rode home with an AR15 strapped to my back... Didn't have any trouble, but I did notice a LOT less people willing to tailgate me on that trip!

Hehehe, no... Out of consideration for the general public, I don't wear the kilt while riding... I change in the parking lot instead. (Wear jeans while riding, get there, put kilt on over pants, drop trou, enjoy day at faire, come back out pull pants back on under kilt, take kilt off, head home.)

If you need other sources, you can also hit www.texasguntalk.com www.texasguntrader.com and two wheeled texans site in the classified area www.twtex.com .  There aren't as many listings as on gunbroker or auctionarms, but most of them are in TX and there is a lot to be said for that

But for real, I'd like to go check out Ammo Depot and soon.

If you're riding, if you're in the mood, I recommend getting off of I-30 in Rockwall and going north and taking State Highway 66 east. Highway 66 parallels I-30, but it's a fun 2-lane country road instead of the faceless superslab. (If you're in a hurry, stick to I-30, of course, 66 had stop lights in small cities, that kinda stuff.)

If ya' take Highway 66, you'll wanna take a right on FM36 in Caddo Mills, go under I-30 and get on the service road east bound then take a right back onto FM 36 south of I-30 to Ammo Depot. (Disclaimer - There's about 2-3 miles of construction, currently gravel, on the 66 to I-30 stretch of FM36)

Ammo Depot is visible from I-30, but it's 1/4 mile or so off the freeway.

This is all my neck of the woods, I often ride out to Ammo Depot on the back roads just to have a destination when I've got an hour or two for a quick ride.

I know where we can find some AMMO. Just need the keys to the warehouses it is being stored in by our dear old uncle sam.

http://www.naturalnews.com/036847_ammo_purchases_government_stockpiling_media_lies.htm

It's an obiminal use of government purchasing corruption.

It is in direct conflit with the Geneva convention for a government to use  hollow point ammo in war so they must be planning on using it on us in a police action.

Watch out for some real sticky ammo control laws comming down the pike. FFL permits to manufacture ammo could be invoked without any one knowing the true reason is to dissarm the public. Black powder sales to the Americas from was restricted in the 1700's. That is why Thomas Jefferson chartered EI Dupont to start manufacturing in new england.
